Everybody Talks - Neon Trees



A month ago Neon Trees released an animated version for this video, but I definitely the Zombie Bikers from Hell version much better. But this begs the question, why are there not any drive-in movie theaters with roller skating waitresses?


Is Anybody Out There? - K'naan



Another week, another new K'Naan music, this time with 100% more Nelly Furtado. And I am all for anti-bulling sentiment, but how about not defacing property with profanities?


Drive By - Train



As a dude, I have naturally never seen an episode of The Bachelor, but I guestimate that the latest Train video is basically every episode of the reality show but with twenty extra chicks hanging around.

Window Seat - Erykah Badu



Yes this is the video that has had the internets all a flutter the last couple days. Yes it draws a thin line between “Inspired by” and “Completely rip off.” Yes it pretty offensive. Yes it is a little offensive. But hats off to Erykah Badu for getting the entire internet, including myself, to post it.


Stop for a Minute – Keane and K’Naan



Even though we have not even reached April yet, I think we can go ahead and call the race for most random collaboration of 2010 and declare Keane and K’Naan the winner.

Meet Me in the Sky – Bone Thugs-N-Harmony



Bone Thugs-N-Harmory won the Most Random Collaberation a few years back when they teamed up with Phil Collins (no, seriously). And it hard to hate on Kid Cudi when he is making Charles in Charge references, but I am not sure what it says about my hometown that the two rap artist that come from my area are Bone, who no one can understand (and should have stopped with Tha Crossroads when it came to a memorial song), and Cudi, who brought emo-rap to the mainstream. Yep, that pretty much sums up Cleveland.

Do Wah Doo – Kate Nash



Just days after Barney Stinson mentioned that stewardess was the hottest profession of the 50’s, here comes a video from Kate Nash where she starts as a 50’s stewardess. Flight Suit Up.


In the Sun – She and Him



From the first single it sounds like Volume 2 from She and Him is going to sound much like Volume 1: kind of bland. But at least the music video is fun with Zooey Deschanel looking her Winnie Cooperest.


Wavin’ Flag – K’Naan



For all the soccer fans out there (or football to all you foreigners) prepare yourself to be hearing this song from K’Naan a lot this summer at is the official song of the upcoming World Cup.


I Wish it Would Rain - Mayer Hawthorne



Pretty cool concept for a video for the latest from Mayer Hawthorne, too bad The Swell Season came up with pretty much the same idea last year.

On to the Next One – Jay-Z featuring Swiss Beatz



Pretty wise of Jay-Z to debut a video called On to the Next One as the first of the decade. But dude sure likes his black and white videos just like his last one. No comment on all the weird vinaigrettes aside from following up the Obama line with a picture of a crucifix and bullets.


Skeletons – The Yeah Yeah Yeahs



On to the next artsy video, this time courtesy of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. But the video does fit the song very well.


Dreamer – K’naan



K’naan landed three songs on my Best Songs of 2009 list and it looks like he may land another one for the 2010 list and maybe be crack the Best Videos list with this one.


I’ll Never Let You Go – Flavor Flav



So this Flavor Flav video happened. If Jay-Z wasn’t able to kill auto-tune, this song may inadvertently do the trick.

Best of 2009 Redux

Every year I like to end my year in review with a quick wrap of some minor lists and some stuff for stat geeks like me of yearly states of most viewed 9th Green pages et al. Below you can find those as well as my top artists of the year with where they landed on my various lists of the year (check the Best of 2009 label at the bottom of the post for those), and for those of you that like making CD, there are the top 20 songs from my 100 Best Songs of 2009 list that fit nicely onto one CD.

Top Artists
1. Taylor Swift (Songs: 15, 70; Readers: 11, 22; Performances: 7; Videos: 30)/Kanye West (Songs: 2, 4, 69; Readers: 4, 17; Mash Ups 10; Videos: 6, 21, 50): Ironically last year, this duo went two and three respectively for Top Artists of 2008 and this year they became forever intertwined for which Swift will be indebted to West because she became America’s Sweetheart overnight simply because a black dude stole her spotlight. As for West, after taking Jay-Z’s advise to get back to rap, your T-Paining too much, his verses landed in two of the top four songs of the year.

2. Dave Matthews Band (Songs: 5, 8, 83; Videos: 41; Albums: 4): After the death of a bandmate, Dave and the boys put out their best work of the decade in tribute to LeRoi Moore.

3. Jay-Z (Songs: 4, 47, 96; Readers: 4, 8; Performances: 3, 15; Videos: 6; Albums: 19): Speaking of J Hova, with Run This Town finally made a post retirement song that stood up to the rest of his catalogue.

4. K’Naan (Songs: 65, 68, 79; Albums: 6): Ever since the Snow debacle of 1992, us American have refused to listen to any Canadian rapper until Drake came out this year. But the real rapping export from the Great White North us Yankees should have been paying more attention to was K’Naan who dropped the best rap album of the year.

5. The Roots (Songs: 93; Performances: 1, 4, 8, 14, 23, 25): Thanks to being the Jimmy Fallon house band, The Roots dominated the Best Live Performance of 2009 list. Here’s hoping there are more inspired collaborations in store for 2010.

The 100 Best Songs of 2009

It is probably not a good sign for the music business that the biggest song of the year was released back in 1969. But for some reason, three artists all used Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye by Steam in their songs. Wale started out ’09 sampling it for Chillin’. Then Kristinia DeBarge used it as the chorus for her debut song, the aptly titled Goodbye. Then Jay-Z tried to kill off Auto-Tune with the help of the famous cadence. Despite the overuse of cheesy sports anthems, 2009 was actually a great year for good music (on the flip side, it wasn’t much of a good year for great music) as this was the largest pool of songs, 250 (shoot me an e-mail if you want the full list, I'll send you my speadsheet), which I had to cut down for my Top 100. I Take Rappers on a Field Trip any Day

Looking at the track list on Troubadour you see your typically “featuring” guests like Chubb Rock, Damian Marley, Adam Levine, Mos Def and, wait, Kirk Hammett? Okay, so K’Naan may not be your typical rapper as seen by his biography: Somalia by way of Canada (insert your Snow jokes here). With those roots, K’naan has managed to make an African influenced rap album that actually works that is full with A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde references to satisfy old school fans.

As for the Kirk Hammett appearance, it seems like every time a rapper tries mixing the genre with hard rock, they fail miserably or just come off cheesy (just ask Puff Daddy), but If Rap Gets Jealous actually can appeal to hip hop purists and metal heads the same. Oddly, he follows up that song with his most mellow song on the disk, Wavin’ Flag, a marching song that could do well as a nation anthem somewhere.

For those looking for a club banger, turn to the Adam Levine assisted Bang Bang where K’Naan takes a break from the political themes of the rest of the album, but still doesn’t sound tired like most rap songs on the radio. Other standout tracks are the album opener T.I.A., the shout and stomp along anthem and ABC’s that brings out Chubb Rock out of obscurity for a Jamaican themed jam.
