  1. Darling, you're sorely confused about the concept of a "One Hit Wonder." For example, Five for Fighting has had more than one hit, and Superman isn't even their most famous song, same goes for Cobra Starship, the Jonas Brothers, Dashboard Confessional, etc. Many of the other songs can hardly be considered hits because most people havn't heard these songs mostly because you have a lot of semi-indie artists on the list, like Bright Eyes, or my personal favorite artist Butch Walker. That being said, I mean no hate. I think this was a good list of songs, just maybe not all of them are one hit wonders. Also, you blog is very nice. Kudos.

  2. I will admit that the term One Hit Wonder is subjective (watch the VH1 lists and note how many times theysay an artist had othetr hits and I was irked that Billboard called Gnarles Barkley a one hit wonder) so all your gripes are warrented (well Superman was by far Five for Fightings biggest hit). But the thing is, with no disrespect to the artists on the list (I quite like most of them and each and every one of these songs are on my iPod) this list was compiled from nothing but what I consider were hits based on my year end countdown of the best songs of the year. I plan on going into more detail tomorrow.

    1. They came, they conquered... they were never heard from again. This is the essence of a one hit wonder. One hit wonder refers to the artist/band, who had a song that got popular and was known for that song. Their other songs never got as popular. Your source of information shouldn't ever be Wikipedia. While I won't list every single one, because there's just way too many, a good portion of your list has artists who are not what you claim them to be. And your excuse that they only had one hit this decade (I read all your posts), isn't a valid reason 'cause it's implying that the artist is a one hit wonder, when in fact they're not. Class is over. Later.

  3. Your explanation makes enough sense but going over the list I can't help but nitpick: What about artists who had hits in the 90's? SoulDecision had this one HUGE song in the 90s (in Canada at least) and BBMak had another song, probably in '99, that I actually remember (as opposed to "Still On Your Side," which I'll have to listen to again).

Also, do you mean to tell me that you had never put "Mushaboom" on your year-end best list? That makes me cry.

  4. SoulDecision had only one hit this decade in the US according to Wikipedia. The only BBMak song I remembered when making this list was "Still on Your Side" but when I YouTubed another song, I did reconize it.

And I have to admit I never discovred Feist until she released The Reminder so no Mushaboom.

  5. How is Craig David a one hit wonder?

  6. First off, I hate the term one hit wonder because it usually does not apply to a band or singer. People like Rick Astley probably deserve the label, but too often the term is bandied about and applied to acts that actually deserve a little more credit (even if I hate the band personally).

Quick notes - take them with a grain of salt.

Five for Fighting - 100 years was #1 for 12 straight weeks. Superman never hit higher than #14 and

Plain White T's - Yeah, Hey There Delilah was a #1 smash hit. But they also had Hate (I Really Don't Like You) and 1,2,3,4. Neither was as big, but both hit in the top 100.

Bright Eyes - I am a huge fan and I am not as familiar with the song you listed. Personally, Lover I Don't Have to Love, Lua, Road to Joy and First Day of My Life resonate more with fans than When the President Talks to God.

Sum 41 - In Too Deep, though not as big a hit was actually a better song in my opinion.

Ben Lee - Gamble Everything for Love, Love Me Like the World is Ending, Cigarettes Will Kill You all placed in top 100 charts. I don't really care about Lee's chart positions as I think the man is a great songwriter.

  7. I assume whoever made the Craig David does not live in the US as I understand he is big most everwhere else. But in actually calling Craig David a One Hit Wonder is being nice because he never hit it big States Side.

Tony: First off how can you forget Together Forever? (assumming you are comsidering Never Gonna Give You Up Rick Ashley's one hit.)

But yeah, this whole list should taken with a grain of salt. As I mentioned on the on the "Breaking Down" post for this list, what is a One Hit Wonder is totally subjective. The guy who wrote the book on the subject (and I think coined the phrase) said it was one and only one song to make it in the top 40. But considering how the Billboard Hot 100 becaume essentially worthless this decade, there is a lot of wiggle room. This list isn't a statement on the artist themselves as most of them I have multiple songs of theirs on my iPod. And keep in mind Jimi Hendrix is technically a one hit wonder, so yeah, the term is totally subjective.

  8. Gloriana and Owl City are bands that became big in mid to late 2009. Therefore you can't consider them one hit wonders now.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yeah, it may be a little too early, but if I were a betting man, I would put lot of money on Owl City not getting another hit.

  10. vanilla twilight by owl city was on the top 100 i think...

  11. Artists on here who are definitely NOT one-hit wonders:

    M.I.A.
    Feist
    Sum 41

Artists whose hit was too recent for them to be considered a one-hit wonder:

    Owl City
    Plain White Tees
    La Roux

It`s still a decent list I guess, but I feel like there are some other one's on there that aren't really what you call "one-hit wonders."

And although he sucked hard, Sisqo had more than one hit. Sadly.

  12. Ingrid Michaelson is also DEF not a one-hit wonder! "The Way I Am" is probably the only song YOU know by her because it was an early single. But since then she's also had several others which have been popularized by their use in commercials and show and movie soundtracks, including "Keep Breathing" which was in a Grey's Anatomy episode and a clothing commercial (Gap or Old Navy I think...) and "Little Romance" which was on the best-selling Sex and the City (the movie) soundtrack. And I agree with everyone else - she's wayyyy too currrent to be called a one-hit wonder! She will be around for years.

  13. Yellowcard Ocean avenue????

  14. Some of the artists aren't one hit wonders:

Phoenix is a decent sized band who have had many hits, I would have thought Lisztomania would have been their highest selling single in the US anyway?

Kasabian is probably the most ludicrous of the bands you are calling one hit wonders, I don't even know where to begin here. There is no way Club Foot would be their biggest hit anyway, maybe in the US, but that would be pushing it. They must have charted a few times, even in the US?

Hillary Duff has had several (eek) top 40 hits, 'With Love' is apparently her biggest, off of her 2007 album.

Sum 41 No way! Although technically according to Wikipedia that was their only true top 100 in the US they have had several that almost charted, and the band was much bigger (as album sales show) several years after Fat Lip.

Ben Lee, no way. Maybe in the US if you say so, but of all of his singles how is Catch My Disease the one that charted over there? I thought Breathing Tornadoes was his biggest US hit?
