Around the Tubes: June 15, 2024

I have gotten a plethora of cool press releases have been flooding my inbox recently that you may find interesting. This post includes blurbs on Nelly Furtado, Paul McCartney and Wings, and Miranda Lambert.

On August 9, 2024, GRAMMY® Award-winning multiplatinum singer, songwriter, and producer Nelly Furtado will release her breakout full-length debut album, Whoa, Nelly! on vinyl for the first time. Featuring five bonus tracks, Whoa, Nelly! will be available as a deluxe 2LP set pressed on standard black vinyl and a Limited-Edition 2LP version pressed on cotton candy pink and orange peel color vinyl with brand-new alternate cover artPreorder Whoa, NellyHERE.  With its dynamic genre-shifting between dance music, folk, R&B, and Latin stylings, Whoa, Nelly! introduced the songstress as an eclectic pop presence without comparison. She notably wrote and produced the entire body of work, establishing her vision from the jump with anthems like “Hey, Man!” and “Turn Off the Light. Originally released on October 24, 2000, the album achieved a double-platinum certification from the RIAA, while Nelly garnered a total of four GRAMMY® Award nominations in 2002, going on to take home “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance” for the platinum single “I’m Like A Bird.” The record’s tracks have also gathered north of 1 billion total streams and counting to date.

The wait is over: this week, One Hand Clapping, one of the most bootlegged live albums in musical history, finally receives a proper release. In August 1974, when Band on the Run was enjoying a seven-week consecutive #1 stint at the top of the UK album charts, Paul McCartney and Wings headed to Abbey Road Studios for the filming of a video documentary and possible live studio album – One Hand Clapping. Despite overwhelming demand for newly recorded material from the biggest band in the world at that time, One Hand Clapping was never officially released.  Filmed and recorded over four days and directed by David Litchfield, the release of One Hand Clapping is a historic moment for Paul McCartney fans. Over the years, various parts of One Hand Clapping have been bootlegged with varying degrees of success. Some of the material has also appeared on official McCartney releases. However, today’s new release of One Hand Clapping, which features the original artwork designed for the project, including a TV sales brochure for the unreleased film at the time, is the first time the audio for the film—plus several additional songs recorded off-camera--have been officially issued.  Order One Hand Clapping HERE

With smoldering vocals and electric barbed wire guitars turned up, “Wranglers” arrived last month as three-time GRAMMY winner Miranda Lambert’s biggest streaming debut ever, serving as an emphatic introduction of her new alliance with Republic Records with strategic support from Nashville-based Big Loud. As the fire continues to grow both at Country radio and across streaming platforms, the most-awarded artist in Academy of Country Music history now offers an official music video for the tour du force of empowerment. Watch HEREFilmed outside Austin, Texas – the same city where Lambert convened a band of iconic musicians at the storied Arlyn Recording Studios alongside fellow GRAMMY-winning songwriter/producer Jon Randall to craft the new music – the video puts to film the song’s sense of hard-won freedom for anyone leaving a situation that didn’t serve them.

57 Channels and Only This Is On: June 9, 2024

The Acolyte:   So Jason Mendoza is definitely the Master, right? If so, he will go from playing a solemn monk who was secretly a goofball to playing a goofball who is secretly a Sith (which basically and evil Jedi and Jedi's are monk-like).  He better throw a Molotov cocktail sometime this season.

The Challenge All-Stars 4:  I feel like this show has an unusual number of color blind people on this show.  You would think the amount of times a contestant brings up being color blind, they would stop doing these color specific challenges.

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School:  The Hell House was hilarious; though I am not sure it was supposed to be.  But Bloody Mary is Imogen’s mother.  Huh?  But I guess when the twist in the original show was that Alison’s brother turned out to be her other brother’s girlfriend, this makes more sense.  So is this a twin situation or is Imogen just crazy.

The Chi:  When is the men’s group going to finally stop talking about dealing Douda and actually do something?  Well, besides the previous failed assassination attempt.  But baby-daddy twist was a bit too soap-opera like.  Does the timeline even work?  She was gone a very long time and was not showing when she was rescued. This seems more like a retcon more than a plot twist.

With unprecedented access to the mastermind behind the development of modern serial-killer profiling, the series tells Burgess’ tenacious story and her compassion for victims which puts her at the center of solving America’s most infamous true-crime cases. From the widely known Ed Kemper and Ted Bundy to lesser-known cases like the Ski Mask Rapist, Burgess investigates and studies the victims and damaged psyches of their attackers, putting two halves of the same story together to catch a killer. 57 Channels and Only This Is On: June 2, 2024

The Veil:  Well, that was a confusing ending.  But to be honest, I really was not paying close attention.

The Challenge All-Stars 4:  I am annoyed whenever the peanut gallery helps during elimination, but why was Leroy not louder in telling Kam she was missing ball?  Ugg, we could have gotten rid of Cara Maria.  And now she has a star.  But really lame Laurel did not come down.  You gotta get that star sometime.  There may only be an elimination or two left.

Under the Bridge:  I guess that is why they made Warren seem sympathetic despite doing some horrible things.  The postscript made it seem like he turned his life around afterwards.

Hacks:  I am starting to get tired of the hate each, but now the like each other and back again of this show

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School:  With it being Friday the 13th, I thought for sure the movie nerd was going to be targeted this we.  But running barefoot was one of the weaker trials so far.

The Chi:  It is weird seeing protests on the show about defunding the police, a phase I have not heard in a while, when the professional protesting class has moved on to Ceasefire.  But Victor went and got arrested.  Is he finally going to turn on Douda?  What actually can he do at this point if his DNA is at the crime scene and Douda’s is not?

57 Channels and Only This Is On: May 26, 2024

The Challenge All-Stars 4:   Oh poor Cara Maria, all the manipulation did not work this time and she lost her star.  I was wonder why Averey would not want to go down against a vertically challenged person in a jumping challenge, but it did look like Tina’s trampoline was a little higher so I wonder if they did adjust it for height.  But as funny had it been to take Kam’s place and then take Cara Maria’s star, annoying the two who have been trying to manipulate things the last couple weeks, maybe it was best politically.  Still, Averey needs a star bad because there are likely not many more chances.

Under the Bridge:  Wait, do they really have co-od juvie in Canada?  The pregnancy rate has to be sky high there.  But this show is trying way too much to try and make Warren sympathetic.  At the very least he kicked a defenseless girl.  He deserves what he gets.

Survivor:  I kind of liked the new final challenge, much better than the usual standing until ssomeone drops or that stupid catch the balls contraption.  With that said, what a hilariously bad ending to a hisleriously bad season.  I really hope very few “New Era” players return for season 50.

Hacks:  That was kind of cheap to have Debra lose out on the late night gig only for her to get it two episodes later because the guy they pick would rather do some crappy bio-flick by some no name writer.

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School:  The doctor getting mysteriously pushed hurts my she is Bloody Rose theory… though that she did not see anyone is suspicious.  Maybe she did not see anyone because she threw herself down the stairs.

The Chi:  Wait, was the Jesus at the start of the episode supposed to look like Victor with dreads because that was who I thought that was when I first say that.  Maybe it was meant to look like him to remind us of him since he took the episode off.  But did we know that Victor’s buddy and Douda henchman was also the weed grower’s daddy?  That just make all the attempted murder going back and forth more messy.

IN THE
SPOTLIGHT

Jeremy Renner, Hugh Dillon and Derek Webster in Mayor of Kingstown

The ghosts of Mike McLusky’s (Jeremy Renner) past return to haunt him in the third season of the Paramount+ Original Mayor of Kingstown. The series, one of our top-performing original dramas, shakes things up as enemies old and new disrupt the already unbalanced scales of justice within the Michigan prison town.

Series co-creator Hugh Dillon—who also portrays Kingstown’s seasoned, hard-nosed detective, Ian Ferguson—spoke with us about what transpires in a town where incarceration is the only thriving industry.

  • There are new players in Kingstown for season three. Can you tell us about what's at stake for the city?

The threat level in Kingstown has escalated from season to season. Mike is trying harder than ever to maintain balance but is losing his grip on relationships in and outside the prison because of the formidable influence of the new and established players in town.

  • We get a deeper look at Mike's mysterious past and finally learn what happened to him in prison. Tell us why this was the right time to explore that part of his story.

Mike isn't one to wear his heart on his sleeve. The audience learns about Mike in the same way those around Mike learn about him. It was only natural that it would take time for us to peel away the layers of the onion that is Mike McLusky to finally reveal his past.

  • How has Ian's relationship with Mike changed over time? With Mike fully entrenched as the mayor, does Ian see this as a strength or liability?

Ian likes to think that he and Mike have each other's backs no matter what and, for the most part they do, but there are times when Ian's actions complicate matters for Mike. Juggling the interests of so many players in Kingstown, Mike finds it increasingly challenging to shield Ian from the consequences of his questionable judgment calls.

  • Without spoiling anything, is there a favorite scene that you are excited for fans to see?

Jeremy Renner using brass knuckles. Jeremy does his own stunts this season and it's a sight to see. The fans will not be disappointed.

Enter the fray when Mayor of Kingstown premieres June 2.

Zach Gilford in Criminal Minds: Evolution
Zach Gilford in Criminal Minds: Evolution

Once a traditional procedural, Criminal Minds: Evolution's creators are using its reimagining to uncover deeper mysteries.

“For 15 seasons we had a structure that worked and we didn’t want to break that; we wanted to build on it. And so, that’s what we’ve done in this latest iteration,” said showrunner Erica Messer. “‘Evolution’ is the perfect way to describe what we’re doing. It’s taking what we know and love about Criminal Minds, but diving deeper into the stories.”

And one of those stories is Elias Volt’s (Zach Gilford). Last season, we learned serial killer and arch-villain Voit has ties to the government unbeknownst to the Behavioral Analysis Unit, leading to his return in season two. “Zach Gilford is the entire reason that Elias Voit is back this year,” Messer added. “Zach was so compelling that we knew we had just begun to scratch the surface.”

Crack the case when Criminal Minds: Evolution returns June 6.
