Around the Tubes: August 31, 2024

I have gotten a plethora of cool press releases have been flooding my inbox recently that you may find interesting. This post includes blurbs on Noah Kahan, Stevie Wonder, James Bay, John Legend, Jimmy Carter, and #Unfit.

To mark the end of his sold-out and critically acclaimed “We’ll All Be Here Forever Tour” this week, GRAMMY® nominated, multi-platinum singer-songwriter Noah Kahan drops his new live album, Live From Fenway Park, today via Mercury Records / Republic Records—listen HERE. Recorded last month at his back-to-back sold-out shows at Boston’s iconic Fenway Park, the live album is a celebration of Kahan’s massive touring success over the past two years and the final installment of the Stick Season chapter. It features a new unreleased song, “Pain Is Cold Water,” which has gone viral online with fans anxiously awaiting its official release, as well as a live duet performance with fellow GRAMMY® Best New Artist nominee and singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams on “Everywhere, Everything,” who was a surprise special guest during the first night at Fenway Park. On the record, fans can also listen to live versions of Stick Season tracks and favorites from Kahan’s discography, including “Mess” and “Maine.”

Stevie Wonder shares his new song “Can We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart” out now via Republic Records. Listen HERE.  It marks his first solo release since 2020. On the track, Wonder trumpets a call for unity embodied in heartfelt lyrics as he asks, “Can we fix our nation’s broken heart? Are we brave enough to try?” Backed by acoustic guitar and a steady beat, this anthem provides the rhythm and refrain for a core reminder, “We are family. Ultimately, “Can We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart” upholds his lifelong commitment to breaking down walls and bringing people together.

- Three-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated and BRIT Award-winning multi-platinum singer, songwriter, and guitarist James Bay shares a new single entitled “Easy Distraction” out now via Mercury Records. He co-wrote the song with Brandon Flowers of The Killers, marking their first collaboration. The song sets the stage for the release of his anxiously awaited fourth full-length album, Changes All The Time, now landing on October 4, 2024. Pre-order/Pre-save HERE. See full track listing below.  Listen to “Easy Distraction”HERE.  About the song, Bay said, The song is about realizing too late that someone means so much to you, but you still want to show them and let them know. It’s exploring how, in the face of adversity we can still reach out, we can still connect.

Multi-platinum, 12-time Grammy Award-winner John Legend today unveiled My Favorite Dream, an album of sing-alongs and lullabies for children and families, out now via Republic Records: Kids & Family.  A “lush yet gentle collection” of “soulful, capital-J John Legend songs” (Los Angeles Times, Associated Press), the project was produced by singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist Sufjan Stevens, and features nine original tracks written by Legend.  As part of a collaboration with Fisher-Price, the album also includes three bonus tracks with covers of songs from their beloved toys. My Favorite Dream is available to stream/download HERE.  In conjunction with the album’s release, Legend shared a sweet video for “Always Come Back” from the album.  Watch it HERE.  “I’m right in the thick of fatherhood,” says Legend, father of daughter Luna (8), son Miles (6) and two toddlers, daughter Esti and son Wren. “My parents loved to sing around the house, making up bedtime songs for us and songs to motivate and inspire us. And Chrissy and I also love singing to our kids.  We make up little jingles and ditties for them all the time. In our home, music is very important to the way we interact and communicate with them.”

Just one month before Jimmy Carter’s 100th birthday, Virgin Music has released Last Sundays in Plains: A Centennial Celebration. The project features recordings from President Carter’s final Sunday School lessons delivered at Maranatha Baptist Church, in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. Carter speaks about the importance of love, kindness, forgiveness, and reconciliation. His moving lessons are paired with stirring music.  “Let’s celebrate and honor President Carter’s remarkable wisdom through the jubilant power of music. His teachings have inspired us all. Music is a perfect medium to express the joy and gratitude we feel for him,” said Kabir Sehgal, a longtime Carter family friend who orchestrated the music.

- From the filmmakers of the critically-acclaimed blockbuster #UNFIT: THE PSYCHOLOGY OF DONALD TRUMP, which grossed over $2.5 million, has been viewed by millions, and was nominated for the IDA Documentary Awards Video Source Award.  Director, producer, and writer Dan Partland and producer Art Horan are back with #UNTRUTH: THE PSYCHOLOGY OF TRUMPISM examines the psychology of “Trumpism” and the authoritarian strain that it seeded in the American political landscape.  In #UNTRUTH, political conservatives, psychologists, and historians explore how partisanship, disinformation, and social media lead to the anger, conspiracy theories, and political violence, that is threatening democracy around the world.  WATCH THE TRAILER FOR #UNTRUTH NOW: https://youtu.be/cPQ0hDDNZaU

Previewing Only Murders in the Building: Season Four

Only Murders in the Building is the funniest show on television.  There are multiple times when I was laughing so hard while watching the show I had to rewind the scene because I missed what happened next.  Like at the end of the first season when Charles got drugged.  And at the end of the second season during the slow motion portion of the Killer Reveal Party.  (Unfortunately they took a more serious approach with the reveal of the killer in the third season fell a little flat.)  The hardest I laughed outside the final minutes of the season was when Jane Lynch showed up playing Sazz Pataki, Charles Hayden Savage’s stunt double during his CBS procedural days back in the nineties.

Unfortunately the end of the third season saw Sazz being shot and we the audience were left wondering if that bullet was meant for Charles and just hit someone who looked like him instead.  Unlike the first three victims, Sazz is a likeable and empathetic victim (sure flashbacked ended up softening all three of the previous victims), leaving us much more invested in the investigation.  But on the flipside, where the suspect list was much longer for the previous, more hate-able victims, who could possibly want Sazz dead?  Of course, Charles, on the other hand, has plenty of people on that list.  And what exactly was Sazz writing in her blood when she died?  And what was the time sensitive thing she had to tell Charles before she was shot?

Of course, the skeptic in me also wants to bring up my number one rule of television watching: if you do not see a body, they are not really dead (and even if you do see the body, they still might not be dead-dead).  While we saw Sazz get shot, no one discovered her body in the third season.  This was the show that made it look like Ben Glenroy was very dead at the end of season two, but he still managed to show up to the after-party, so there may very well be a twist this season too.

The other big development is that Hollywood wants to make the Only Murders in Building podcast into a movie.  It seems like Amy Schumer wanting to buy the rights seems to be dropped; instead Paramount will be making the show.  Considering 20th Century, which is owned by Disney, produces the real show, I wonder just how hard up for money The Mount is for letting this show make fun of them.  With a Hollywood movie comes Hollywood stars, Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy, and Zach Galifianakis are set to play Mabel, Charles, and Oliver.   Melissa McCarthy, Molly Shannon, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Kind and Edgar from You’re the Worst also make appearances this season.  Oh yeah, and Meryl Streep returns.  And thankfully with The Idol canceled, so Di’vine Joy Randolph was more available for this season. And her return this season might be as memorable as her season three return.  Now, that is a long list of guest stars, but there are a couple of surprise appearances that have not been announced yet to look out for.

With season four, the trio is back for more hilarity.  Thankfully there is not much to pull them apart like last season.  This may be the most the trio has been together compared to previous seasons.  And this season we even get a bonus trio!  Howard is back and has found a new purpose that works better than his time as the stage manager.  Some many guest stars can be tricky, especially whenever they play versions of themselves, but all the actors acquaint themselves perfectly within the story (well, except the directors of the movie who and not quite as bad as the producers from season three, but are still close).  So make sure you have the remote close while watching the new season, because you may have to rewind a few times because you missed something because you were laughing too hard.

Only Murders in the Building airs Tuesdays on Hulu.  Just one episode premieres tomorrow with new episodes weekly.

57 Channels and Only This Is On: August 25, 2024

Snowpiercer:  It was pretty obvious on Lost when someone was going to die.  One of the lesser characters would get their own episode and die at the end.  With an episode entitled, The Engineer, my first thought, oh, that dude is going to die.  But then they talked about Melanie being the head engineer so I thought maybe she was the titular character.  Nope dude died at the end.  Why didn’t he put on a space suit thing?  Kind of an easily avoided death.  And don’t they need an engineer to run the train?

But just a week after saying the new antagonist was no Wilford, Wilford actually shows up.  About time.  We are halfway through the season.  He wasted no time going full Wilford just messing with everyone.  Welcome back.

Orphan Black: Echoes:  Really, of all the aunts that could have shown up?  If you cannot get any of the clones, at least bring in Uncle Donnie instead.  Oh well, thankfully only one episode left.

The Challenge: Battle of the Eras:  Ugg, This could have been an epic elimination with so many annoying people going home.  Instead, Paulie and Amanda were the only ones I was happy to go home.  But why was that stupid block a door challenge the iconic Era Four elimination?  Was it just because scrawny Jay managed to be CT?  But all that told me was that the challenge makers have been slacking for the last ten seasons.

The Ark: So who blew up the gen three clones?  Are we finally going to meet the Eastern Allience?

Around the Tubes: August 24, 2024

I have gotten a plethora of cool press releases have been flooding my inbox recently that you may find interesting. This post includes blurbs on WickedNoah Kahan, Miranda Lambert, Ariana Grande, Phantogram, Ruthie Foster, and Low Cut Connie.

After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.  Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked is the first chapter of a two-part immersive, cultural celebration. Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025.

Following his massive “We’ll All Be Here Forever” sold-out tour across the US this summer, GRAMMY® nominated, multi-platinum singer-songwriter Noah Kahan announces today the final installment of the Stick Season chapter—Stick Season (Live From Fenway Park) will be released on August 30th via Mercury Records / Republic Records. Earlier this week, Kahan cheekily teased the album on social media, revealing that “there’s no way [he] would release something else Stick Season-related…is there?” Recorded last month at his back-to-back sold-out shows at Boston’s legendary Fenway Park, the live album features live performances of songs from his Double-Platinum breakthrough Stick Season album, as well as beloved tracks from his discography. Not to mention, it also includes an unreleased song, “Pain Is Cold Water,” which has become a favorite amongst fans throughout the tour—listen to a teaser of the song HERE.

Following the recent release of her tongue-in-cheek, honky tonk shuffle “Alimony,” Miranda Lambert takes a vulnerable and reflective turn with today’s release of “No Man’s Land” off her upcoming debut for Republic Records, Postcards from Texas, arriving Sept. 13.  Pre-Order / Pre-Save the Album HERE

Grammy Award winning, multi-platinum recording artist, and international superstar, Ariana Grande celebrates a decade of her multi-platinum chart-topping album, My Everything, with new vinyl and digital deluxe album releases of My Everything (Tenth Anniversary Edition) out now via Republic Records.  My Everything (Tenth Anniversary Edition) vinyl includes songs never previously available on vinyl and in a new color variant, pre-order HERE.  The new digital deluxe album also includes bonus tracks “Too Close” and “Cadillac Song” now available globally on all DSPs for the first time, listen HERE.

Phantogram, the duo Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, announce the arrival of their album Memory Of A Day on October 18th on Neon Gold Records. Right after starting a powerful 27-date North American tour with fellow alternative heavyweights Kings of Leon, including headline shows across August, September and October, they are eager to share a third song of their new chapter: “Come Alive” here. Headline shows are on sale hereThe new album launches Phantogram’s new partnership with Neon Gold Records, the celebrated indie label known for its long lineage of powerful alt pop artists from Charli XCX and HAIM to Tove Lo, MARINA and Christine and the Queens.

When GRAMMY®-nominated Americana singer-songwriter Ruthie Foster sat down with producer Tyler Bryant (Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown), the 27 years between them melted away as soon as Foster opened her mouth. With an intuitive artistic connection and free-flowing songwriting sessions, the pair cultivated one of the most personal and uplifting albums in the acclaimed folk-blues artist’s career. Her latest album, Mileage—her tenth studio album and first for Sun Records—is sometimes heartbreaking and sometimes heartwarming, but it’s always profoundly real.   Candid conversations between Native East Texans Foster and Bryant — and his wife, Rebecca Lovell, one-half of the duo Larkin Poe — became the inspiration for the songs on Mileage. During these almost familial musical get-togethers, Foster shared memories from her upbringing in rural Texas, recalling days of fishing, picking muscadines, and her connection with her mother. She also expressed her feelings of love, sending a hopeful and powerful message from her journey through love and life as a queer Black female artist. While wandering down the dirt roads of memory lane, Foster eases through a singular blend of Americana, spanning redemptive gospel, swampy blues, introspective folk, and stirring soul.  Stream Mileage Here.

This week, Low Cut Connie released the official trailer for his hybrid documentary / concert film ART DEALERS, which will premiere to the public for the first time in New York City at Cinema Village on Friday, September 6. The premiere kicks off a string of screening events throughout the month of September that will make stops in the artist’s hometown of Philadelphia, Denver, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles and more. Each screening event will feature a Q&A with Low Cut Connie frontman and co-director Adam Weiner, with co-director Roy Power at select screenings. Below please find a full list of screenings.  Watch the official trailer for ART DEALERS via YouTube.

View from the Peak - Everything coming to Paramount+ in September 2024

This month, we shared the exciting news that our direct-to-consumer segment, which includes Paramount+ and Pluto TV, was profitable this quarter, our first profitable quarter since Paramount+ launched. It’s been our pleasure to deliver world-class content to our growing audience around the globe, and we’re excited to keep building on that momentum. In September, we’re rolling out new seasons of our hit series FrasierTulsa KingDORA and Colin from Accounts; taking to the field with CBS Sports to kick off the 2024 NFL season; and going deep with new original documentaries including the poignant We Will Dance Again and the high-octane Nöthin' But a Good Time: The Uncensored Story of '80s Hair Metal.

For a closer look at everything coming to Paramount+ in September, check out the latest edition of View from the Peak.

BEHIND
THE STREAMS

Sylvester Stallone and Garrett Hedlund in Tulsa King

In the Paramount+ Original series Tulsa King, we were introduced to charismatic mafia capo Dwight Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) who took on the impossible task of creating a criminal empire in bucolic, out-of-the-way Tulsa, Oklahoma. As we return for season two, Manfredi will need to contend with ruthless mob bosses and even the FBI who all want a piece of him. He may want a peaceful life, but for executive producer and writer Terence Winter, Manfredi is an interesting study in contrasts.

“I don't think anyone is either all good or all bad, even hardened gangsters like Dwight,” Winter said. “By showing him in all his colors, he exhibits many moments of humor, kindness, fairness and even love, characteristics audiences recognize in themselves. This season we've got brawls, shootouts and other assorted mayhem. It's always fun to shoot big action scenes, especially when they involve Sylvester Stallone, the greatest action star in history.”

Stallone is back in business when season two of Tulsa King debuts September 15.

IN THE
SPOTLIGHT

Kelsey Grammer and Jack Cutmore-Scott in Frasier

In the Paramount+ Original series Frasier, the titular TV psychiatrist uproots his life, moving from Seattle to Boston, to rekindle his relationship with his son, Freddy. Throughout season one, the effete academic Frasier and down-to-earth firefighter Freddy struggled to connect and build a new life together. Ahead of season two, we chat with Jack Cutmore-Scott, who plays Freddy, to see where things stand with father and son.

  • Freddy is such a contrast to his father, and the tension between them has created an interesting dynamic. Can you tell us more about how you developed the character?

Freddy was originally developed by Joe Cristalli, Chris Harris and the Frasier team. It has been a lot of fun watching and helping them shape him. He’s definitely found his footing as someone who shares a lot of similarities with Frasier but also draws a lot from his grandfather, Martin. And while their dynamic is different from Frasier’s relationship with his dad, I really enjoy the moments when we get to echo their rapport.

  • Where do we find Freddy in season two? What are you most excited for audiences to see?

My read on Freddy going into season two was grounded in the fact that he and his dad have found a little security in their relationship. Freddy knows Frasier isn’t going anywhere, he’s expressed his frustrations and resentments, and now we get to have fun watching these two bounce off each other while knowing it’s all rooted in a deep affection. I’m really excited for people to feel the same relaxation I felt playing opposite Kelsey this season. They still push each other’s buttons, absolutely, but we get to have a lot more fun while we do it.

  • There are a number of guest stars reentering the building and stepping back into their roles from the original series. Can you share a bit more on working with some of the original cast?

It was, in a word, surreal. We all felt very spoiled to have such incredible guest stars and I felt extra lucky to spend a little time back in Seattle on a few familiar sets. Each and every one of the returning cast members were as charming as they were funny, but Harriet, who plays Frasier’s former agent Bebe Glazer, managed to bring the house down over a conference call during the table read. That’s a first for me.

  • Without any spoilers, what can fans look forward to in season two?

Superb writing, innovative directing, visionary lighting and scenic design, and heretofore unparalleled comedic performances. More of the same, basically!

Reconnect with Frasier when season two premieres September 19.

MOUNTAIN
OF MOVIES

Julia Garner and Dianne Wiest in Apartment 7A

Next month Apartment 7A takes horror fans back to the twisted, Satanic world of cult classic Rosemary’s Baby. The film reintroduces Terry Gionoffrio, an aspiring dancer living with a mysterious couple with a dark secret to hide.

“I suppose what attracted me most to Terry’s story was I found it really relatable,” said director and co-writer Natalie Erika James. “She’s someone with so much drive and ambition. Terry is a really unexplored piece of Rosemary’s Baby, so it was really exciting to be able to expand upon that.”

The project has attracted a stellar cast—from Julia Garner who plays Gionoffrio to Dianne Wiest as her benefactor Minnie Castavet—who bring new life to characters from the iconic film. “Julia Garner has an incredible spark,” James said. “She portrays Terry with such purpose and is so compelling onscreen. I love Dianne’s Minnie too. She balances that sweetness with a real kind of dark, cutting nature.”

Stream the classic Rosemary’s Baby today on Paramount+ and step into Apartment 7A when it premieres September 27.
