Around the Tubes: May 10, 2024

I have gotten a plethora of cool press releases have been flooding my inbox recently that you may find interesting. This post includes blurbs on Where Everybody Knows Your Name with Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson (Sometimes)MisterWives, Grouplove, Fall Out Boy, Nia Smith, and Dexter’s Laboratory.

SiriusXM today announced the launch of “Where Everybody Knows Your Name with Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson (Sometimes),” a new original podcast hosted by the Emmy Award-winning actors and friends. Premiering June 12, the podcast will see Ted and Woody reconnect 30 years after the end of their acclaimed sitcom “Cheers,” joined by a plethora of exciting guests.  A trailer is available by clicking HERE.  Each week on “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” Ted and (when he can find him) Woody will sit down with a special guest to dig beyond the career highlights and into the stuff of life that makes us who we are. While listeners can expect some fond reminiscences of their time on Cheers, the show will mostly serve as a freewheeling exchange of laughter and wisdom as the charismatic duo reconnect both with each other and with the talented friends they’ve made throughout their incredible careers. Listeners will join Ted and Woody as they have insightful conversations with Eric Andre, Will Arnett, Kristen Bell, Laura Dern, Jane Fonda, Simu Liu, Megan Mullally, Conan O’Brien, Nick Offerman, Martin Short, Mary Steenburgen and more, and raise a glass to these stars’ extraordinary journeys.

-  New York City/Los Angeles-based alt-pop group MisterWives announce the deluxe edition of their 2023 LP, Nosebleeds: Deluxe, due out this summer. Alongside the big news, the band delivers the first taste with booming track "Organized Chaosout everywhere now. The forthcoming collection includes reworked versions of all original tracks with plenty of surprises in store.  Out today, the self-aware, roaring "Organized Chaos" picks up where Nosebleeds left off–launching right back into erratic patterns and cycles that have become comfortable. This time, though, Lee has recognized these habits and this is the final straw.  Nosebleeds, the fervent fourth studio album by MisterWives arrived in July 2023 and propelled the group into new territory and has garnered over 20M streams across all platforms. The album garnered widespread support from several leading publications, including the first single, "Out Of Your Mind," premiered by PAPER Magazine, the title track premiered by Rolling Stone and support from Variety who wrote, "MisterWives are entering a new era in their nearly decade-long career."

- Indie rock icons GROUPLOVE release I Want It All Right Now Deluxe, featuring six new tracks via Glassnote Records. Seeing the band at their most liberated, their sixth studio album is their self-coined “resistance pop” with self-aware reckoning. In today’s deluxe tracks, GROUPLOVE sinks deeper into the absolution that comes with shaking off the expectation of perfection — as musicians, as partners, as parents. A band that transcends their ever-shapeshifting genre, GROUPLOVE too has evolved over the last decade, channeling their ecstatic energy into the deepest tensions of the human psyche, all while playing with the contradictions and complications of existing — Stream I Want It All Right Now Deluxe.  The standout track, “Can You Feel My Love,” takes a more mellow approach to its transparent storytelling. Vocalist/guitarist Christian Zucconi said, “Can you feel my love? It’s a question and it’s the answer. I’m asking you, I’m asking my family and I’m asking myself. I need to know you can feel it. With all my flaws and all my imperfections can you feel my love?”

In March, GRAMMY Award-nominated and multi-platinum selling rock band Fall Out Boy took the stage at Madison Square Garden in front of a sold out crowd for a show mxdwn described as “a masterclass in nostalgia and unpredictability.” From a guitar doubling as a flamethrower, to the first-ever full-band performance of “Get Busy Living Or Get Busy Dying (Do Your Part To Save the Scene and Stop Going to Shows),” and a surprise guest appearance from The Academy Is’ Will Beckett to perform “Slow Down,” Fall Out Boy’s MSG show pulled in fans from all over the world. And with the conclusion of their sold out So Much For (2our) Dust Tour last month, Fall Out Boy will globally broadcast this epic performance in partnership with premier streaming platform Veeps on Friday, June 7, 2024. Veeps All Access subscribers in the U.S. can access the show for free as part of their subscription; for fans outside the U.S., tickets to the livestream are now on sale for $11.99.

British Musician Nia Smith is just 20 years old, but her talent and wisdom are not indicative of her young years. Today she shares her stunning debut single ‘Give Up The Fear’ – an earnest and heartfelt offering filled with ruminative, uplifting pianos underpinned by lyrics on pursuing a dream.  Produced by Grammy-award-winning producer Jimmy Napes, the song presents a deeper meaning alongside an innate musical charisma; “[it’s] about finding that inner-child again… you know how when you’re a kid you don’t overthink or second-guess creativity? I would watch my little brother paint when he wants to paint, draw when he wants to draw, while I second-guess what I want to do” Nia states.  WATCH OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO HERE

57 Channels and Only This Is On: May 5 2024

The Veil:  My only take away from the first two episodes is that at least someone called Elizabeth Moss out for that poor accent.

The Challenge All-Stars 4:  Instead of trying to get into the middle group to help LeRoy, should Kam not try to get into the bottom?  If her team is in the bottom, then it is less likely that LeRoy’s team gets in the bottom.  Though I have to wonder why Kam was not penalized for taking her bobblehead off before the challenge was over.

Under the Bridge:  The problem with shows that should have been a movie is we get completely unnecessary episodes like this.  We really did not need to see the dead chick’s parent’s meet cute.  But I was surprised she mentioned her killer at the start of the episode.  I thought they would tease why exactly she had the boots in her closet.  Instead they confirmed she killed her in a very nonchalant way.

Survivor:  Lol, you think after Hunter got blindsided last week after being convinced Q was the easy vote, no one would get duped again.  Except they pulled the exactly same play this week.  Of course they are not going to vote out Q, everyone wants to sit next to him at Final Tribal.   Sitting next to him, Venus, and / or raving lunatic Liz will be one of the easiest wins in the history of the show.

Ghosts:  Really, they are doing another cliffhanger?  I wonder if Isaac will be missing for as long as Flower was this season.

A Gentleman in Moscow:  Interesting, they switched from days the gentleman has been to the exact year.  So no more long division, but now I need to try and remember when the first started.  I believe that was 1921.  So that put it at about 26 years, or about 8 years since the last episode if my math is correct.

I always assumed Rostov would leave the hotel at some point, but I figured that would be the final scene of the series, I really was shocked that it actually happened in this episode.  With two episodes left it seemed obvious he would find his way back into the hotel, the only question was how.  I guess it makes the most sense that Osip was the one to show some humanity and empathy for Rostov.  Now I wonder if the show ends with Osip letting Rostov out.  Maybe he helps fake his death and can leave that way.

Around the Tubes: May 4, 2024

I have gotten a plethora of cool press releases have been flooding my inbox recently that you may find interesting. This post includes blurbs on Pearl Jam, Miranda Lambert, Coldplay, Sublime, and Beat the Bridge.

The iconic Pearl Jam sits down with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 at their warehouse headquarters in Seattle for an in-depth conversation ahead of the release of Dark Matter. They talk about why Andrew Watt was the perfect producer for them, collaborating with Stevie Wonder on the song “Waiting For Stevie,” and how a studio flood led to them finishing the record at Rick Rubin’s legendary Shangri-La Studio. Zane gets an exclusive look inside the warehouse with unprecedented access. The band deep dives with him into how they feel about their critics, reflect back on their Ticketmaster feud, and their purpose of striving to be a positive force in the world.  Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpuuIpsgaPQ

Miranda Lambert has never flinched when it comes to her music. Full-tilt, strong as hell, she’s been the go-to woman for tender toughness and reckoning when it comes to no-good men. Having announced her alliance with Republic Records with strategic support from the Nashville-based Big Loud, the most-awarded artist in Academy of Country Music history and triple Grammy-winner now drops “Wranglers,” her first single under her new deal. Listen HERE.  A tour du force of empowerment in the face of a less than stand-up paramour, “Wranglers” burns like heatwaves in the desert – and announces the next wave of the maverick groundbreaker’s creative sojourn. With tart vocals and electric barbed wire guitars turned up, the slow broil churn seizes on the slow death of love, the callousness of men who won’t see and the strength of a woman who sets destiny in motion and survives in its wake.

In the spring of 2023, Coldplay - Music of the Spheres: Live at River Plate hit cinemas for two days only. Filmed during Coldplay’s sold out, ten-night run at Buenos Aires’ River Plate stadium, the film captures the band's acclaimed Music of the Spheres World Tour, which has been heralded by The Times as “the greatest live music show ever.” On Saturday, May 11 at 12pm PT/8pm BST, premier streaming platform Veeps will air the film, taking the record-breaking concert to Coldplay fans around the world who weren’t able to see it in theaters or in-person (and to those that want to relive it!). The film will be free to view as a live airing and available on-demand for audiences to rent after the live broadcast for $3.99.   Coldplay - Music of the Spheres: Live at River Plate will be for free during its initial online premiere on May 11 at 12pm PT/8pm BST via veeps.com. Following the conclusion of the live broadcast, the film will be available on veeps.com for $3.99 rental for the next year.

Iconic California music and art collide as Sublime announces a new collaboration with renowned American Chicano graffiti artist Charles “Chaz” BojĂ³rquez. The new venture, SUBLIME X CHAZ, will feature limited-edition merchandise sold online through Sublime’s official store, sublimelbc.store.   Known as the godfather of West Coast graffiti, Chaz’s legendary American Chicano aesthetic transformed Cholo street graffiti into a well-respected and influential art form with a signature style that reflects the cultures and language of East Los Angeles. Exclusive SUBLIME X CHAZ designs will now become wearable art on jackets, shirts, hats and socks, while inventory lasts.

Based on the hit BBC show Bridge Of Lies and format created by STV Studios, BEAT THE BRIDGE features an enormous interactive bridge that dares players to cross by stepping on the right answers to challenging trivia questions. Each step forward puts money in the team’s bank, with bonus money for each successful crossing. However, the team gets to keep the money only if it can “beat the bridge” by returning one of its players back across before time expires in an exciting end game.  BEAT THE BRIDGE will premiere Monday, June 10 on Game Show Network and air weeknights at 6pm.

Transmissions from Pluto - Everything coming to Pluto TV in May 2024

The May edition of Transmissions from Pluto has landed in your inbox! In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) Month, we're rolling out movie marathons featuring beloved stars like Michelle Yeoh, Dwayne Johnson and Jackie Chan. We also have an anime-zing 100 hours of series and movies dedicated to the Japanese art form—or what we’re calling Ani-May! And that’s only scratching the surface. From boxing to poker to Formula 1, our new channels deliver the action. And they wouldn’t be possible without our programming team who share what goes into curating Pluto TV.

For a sneak peek at all the excitement heading your way this May, dive into the latest edition of Transmissions from Pluto.

FAST FORWARD

At Pluto TV, we’re all about curating thoughtful channels and collections for the ultimate lean-back viewing experience. Our programming team leverages its expertise and love of entertainment to create channels that help audiences discover—and rediscover—entertainment that fuels their unique world of interests. We have Star Trek channels for Trekkies by Trekkies, true crime channels for amateur detectives and game show channels for Trebeks-in-training. Our programmers exist to help viewers find their orbit.

This month, we sit down with Programming Manager Philip Yu and Senior Programming Manager Nikki Frangella, who play pivotal roles in shaping our content offering. A prominent voice in the Asian American community and founder and editor of Angry Asian Man, Philip helped curate our collection for AAPI Heritage Month. Nikki, who has been with Pluto TV since the very beginning, is behind Ani-May!

What is your approach to programming?

PY: I treat every block of programming as a mini film festival serving the channel's voice and audience. So on, say, Flicks of Fury, you'll have a night of Jet Li's greatest hits, followed by a night of action flicks that center Muay Thai, followed by a block of movies just featuring hella swords. It's really fun.

NF: I approach programming by leveraging data insights to guide decision-making, complemented by my perspective as a passionate consumer. I analyze the data to validate hypotheses, enabling us to refine our strategies. Whether replicating successful scenarios or daring to innovate, my aim is to continually enhance our viewers' satisfaction and engagement.

Which trends have you noticed viewers respond to?

PY:
What's been effective lately is nostalgic, tried-and-true franchises that the average user has presumably already seen many times over. That has driven the recent growth of a channel like 80s Rewind, thanks to iconic films like the original Rambo trilogy and the Beverly Hills Cop movies.

NF: Viewers thrive on content they're passionate about and our research indicates that extended blocks of their favorite programming significantly enhance viewer retention. Our strategy focuses on providing a continuous stream of beloved content throughout the day, resulting in heightened engagement levels.

What are your picks for May?

PY: May is AAPI Heritage Month, so I'm highlighting Asian American cinema with some indie favorites: Better Luck Tomorrow, Saving Face and The Motel.

NF: Since Ani-May will be in full swing, I have to recommend both our Sailor Moon and Anime All Day channels. We have some exciting marathons coming throughout the month.

Around the Tubes: April 27, 2024

I have gotten a plethora of cool press releases have been flooding my inbox recently that you may find interesting. This post includes blurbs on Johnny Cash, Miranda Lambert, Billy Idol, Paul McCartney and Wings, and Becoming Karl Lagerfeld.

In early 1993, the legendary Johnny Cash found himself between contracts in his then nearly 40-year career and recorded an album’s worth of songwriting demos at LSI Studios in Nashville of songs he’d written over many years. LSI at the time was owned by his son-in-law Mike Daniels and daughter Rosey, and he wanted to help the family financially while also record some songs special to him. Not long after the fruitful session, Johnny met producer Rick Rubin, and the recordings were shelved as the two embarked on an important and prolific musical partnership that revitalized the Man in Black’s career that would last the rest of his life.   Some thirty years later, John Carter Cash, the son of Johnny and June Carter Cash, rediscovered the songs and stripped them back to just Johnny’s powerful, pristine vocals and acoustic guitar. Along with co-producer David “Fergie” Ferguson, the two invited a handpicked group of musicians that played with Johnny, including guitarist Marty Stuart and the late bassist Dave Roe, along with drummer Pete Abbott and several others, to the Cash Cabin, a hallowed space in Hendersonville, Tenn. where Johnny would write, record and relax, to breathe new life into the tracks, taking the sound back to the roots and heart of the songs.  Listen to “Well Alright” and pre-order Songwriter here: https://JohnnyCash.lnk.to/SongwriterPR

Always music forward and reaching for new levels of candor in her country, trailblazing superstar/songwriter Miranda Lambert forges a new creative alliance designed to take the three-time GRAMMY winner to even more powerful spaces. Having just wrapped her twice-extended, 48-show Velvet Rodeo residency in Las Vegas, the most awarded artist in Academy of Country Music history – including their top Entertainer of the Year honor – signs with Republic Records. The deal will include support from the Nashville-based Big Loud, including Country Radio promotion as well as other marketing efforts, all as a part of the overall strategic partnership with Republic Records.  The announcement signals Lambert’s first new solo music since 2022’s critically acclaimed, GRAMMY-, ACM- and Country Music Association-nominated Palomino. “Wranglers,” arriving May 3, is her first track.  New Single “Wranglers” Available Everywhere May 3- Pre Save HERE

 - Rock legend Billy Idol is marking the 40th Anniversary of his landmark sophomore album Rebel Yell with a Deluxe Expanded Edition out now via Capitol/UMe. In celebration of the release, Idol is debuting the never-before-heard Billy Idol/Steve Stevens track “Best Way Out of Here” from the original Rebel Yell recording sessions; stream/share the track and order the album HERE.  The reissue features a selection of previously unreleased songs and demos including “Best Way Out of Here,” the Poolside remix of Idol’s smash hit “Eyes Without A Face,” Idol’s never-before-released cover of the Rose Royce single “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” and much more.

The wait is over: With the June 14 release of One Hand Clapping, one of the most bootlegged live albums in musical history will finally receive a proper release. In August 1974, when Band on the Run was enjoying a seven-week consecutive #1 stint at the top of the UK album charts, Paul McCartney and Wings headed to Abbey Road Studios for the filming of a video documentary and possible live studio album – One Hand Clapping. Despite overwhelming demand for newly recorded material from the biggest band in the world at that time, One Hand Clapping was never officially released.  Filmed and recorded over four days and directed by David Litchfield, the release of One Hand Clapping is a historic moment for Paul McCartney fans.  Over the years, various parts of One Hand Clapping have been bootlegged with varying degrees of success.  Some of the material has also appeared on official McCartney releases. However, the June 14 release of One Hand Clapping, which features the original artwork designed for the project, including a TV sales brochure for the unreleased film at the time, is the first time the audio for the film—plus several additional songs recorded off-camera--have been officially issued.  Preorder HERE

In 1972, Karl Lagerfeld (Daniel BrĂ¼hl) is 38 and not yet wearing his famous catogan. He is a ready-to-wear designer, unknown to the general public. While he meets and falls in love with the sultry Jacques de Bascher (ThĂ©odore Pellerin), an ambitious and troubling young dandy, the most mysterious of fashion designers dares to take on his friend (and rival) Yves Saint Laurent (Arnaud Valois), a genius of haute couture backed by the redoubtable businessman Pierre BergĂ© (Alex Lutz).  BECOMING KARL LAGERFELD, dapted from the novel “Kaiser Karl” by RaphaĂ«lle BacquĂ© published by Ă©ditions Albin Michel.  Premieres Exclusively on Hulu Friday, June 7.  Watch the Official Trailer HERE !
