Previewing the Return of The Closer and Rizzoli and Isles

Next week The Closer reaches its 100’s episode, but before then number ninety-nine airs tonight at the show returns for the second half of its seventh season (before the series concludes next summer) and once again Brenda and Fritz will be going head to head on whose case it is when a principal ends up dead in the same fashion a TSA agent was killed a week earlier. Things get complicated when something interesting gets found while searching the home of the school’s football coach.

The Closer pulls out all the stops for its milestone episode next week. And by all the stops I mean Fred Willard. In a Santa suit. Drunk. And the victim is another Santa that is employed by his workshop who dies in a stunt gone wrong which just so happens to be caught on film by Buzz and his visiting sister Christine Wood (Perfect Couples) who helps solve the case while gaining the attention of all the guys on the force. The holiday theme will carry into episode 101 when Frances Sternhagen and Barry Corbin return as Brenda’s parents who come to town to celebrate the holiday.

The federal civil rights suit against Brenda will come up a few times over the five episodes that will air this winter with Mark Pellegrino and Curtis (Booger!) Armstrong reprising their roles as lawyers in the case. Also showing up in the next couple weeks include Mark Moses (Mad Men) and Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds) as the LAPD’s Police Commissioner and his wife while Jason George (Off the Map) will show up as a businessman. And did I mention a drunken Fred Willard as Santa? Oh yeah, and fighting elves.

Following The Closer for the next five weeks as usual is Rizzoli and Isles as it closes out its sophomore season and they also have a special guest to roll out its return: Bill O’Reilly. The talking head is in town to cover the trial of a gangsta much to the chagrin of Rizzoli (and joy of her mother who loves his Irish eyes). Naturally O’Reilly does not have many nice things to say about the Force when the key witness in the case shows up dead (but come short of calling anyone a “pinhead”).

Previewing the Second Half of Season Four of Leverage

When we last left off the Leverage team, the dude from Deadwood made an offer to Nate that he could refuse: he would offer up corrupt people for the Leverage team to take down, but in doing so will profit from the outcome. An offer that Nate not so politely decline, not that it has stopped Tom Nuttall from continuing to try to get Nate to accept.

That leads us to tonight when Leverage returns to finish up its fourth season with eight straight weeks worth of episodes. Yes that includes new episodes on Christmas and New Years Day and no there is no Christmas themed episode (no word on if they will re-air last year’s The Ho Ho Ho Job within the next month). Instead tonight the gang will be heading back to college to look into shady sociological experiments that use homeless veterans as their lab rats.

Fans of The Office will want to tune in next week (12/4) as the Leverage team infiltrates an office where someone is suspected of embezzlement all the while a documentary crew is filming the office and eighty percent of the episode uses just the documentary footage confessional style interviews that look like they were filmed in the Dufler Mifflin breakroom. Playing the role Michael Scott is Josh Randall (Ed’s Dr. Burton). Unfortunately none of the Leverage team takes the characterization of anyone else on the show, but it does look like Nate raided the closet of Dwight Schrute.

The next week starts up a special two week event where the boys and girls work on separate cons on the same night of their day off with Jeri Ryan reprising her role as Tara who replaced Sophia in the team during the second season. Naturally the ladies week is first. When the team finally convenes, they will be battling Emma Caulfield (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) who runs a ring of trophy wives targeting old men. When the new year comes, expect some more familiar faces as the season closes out including Tom Skerritt as Nate’s father, Richard Chamberlain as Parker’s “father”, Kari Matchett as Nate’s ex-wife, and yes, even Wil Wheaton returns as Chaos.

Big News of the Week: Ndamukong Suh Officially a Dirty Player: If bodyslamming quarterbacks WWF style or ripping guy’s helmets off their heads was not enough, Suh getting thrown out of a game on Thanksgiving for kicking sealed his fate as a dirty player. But the best part is that following the game Suh actually tried to convince everyone that he was not stopping on the dude but was just trying to get his balance not thinking we had slow motion, video evidence that he was trying to stomp the dude out.


The Walking Dead: I understand the sediment that you would want to keep your friends and neighbors around in case there is a cure, but there is no cure for death. I take it this is yet another zombie story where the characters live in a world where no one has ever come up with a concept of a zombie before.

Homeland: I knew Brady explaining everything away last episode was a bit too easy, and we finally get conformation that Brody was working with Nassir. But now that he is “out” what now?

How I Met Your Mother: Robin is pregnant? But more importantly Winston Zeddemore asked Marshall, who you gonna call?”!!!

The Sing Off: First off, please no more Mega Mix Week please, even the best performance (Urban Method) was mediocre at best. Then, with a half an hour to go, they only had one more group to performance and I wondered if they were actually going to string the elimination for twenty minutes? Apparently they would and having the bottom two perform their “best song” was really poor planning on the show’s part. Couldn’t they brought in a guest performance or just have a second group performance? It did not help that all the while I actually thought they would advance all four groups to the finale like they did last season. Even after they voted I thought Nick would chime in saying he was voting for Afro Blue forcing a tie. It is a shame that did not happen because Afro Blue was my second favorite group of the season. But Antoine Merriweather made it and head over to NBC.com by Sunday at 9:00 AM to vote for him.

Parenthood: Watching Kristina lose her mind over the receptionist kissing Adam was painful enough, but knowing that some of the writers were also responsible for Friday Night Lights which handled someone dealing with someone else kissing their spouse the right way (remember Glen?), made it that much more painful to sit through.

Sons of Anarchy: My first thought at the final scene was, “wow, they really killed of Clay, I thought if they were to do it, they would wait until the season finale!” But my second though was “Wait, it looks like the bullet went into his shoulder.” If it turns out to be a non fatal shooting, that would make the second cliffhanger death fake out this season which it two too many.

Suburgatory: I have long thought all the adults sans George are family worthless on this show, but this was the first episode where I actually enjoyed Dallas as she was stuck with Tessa for Thanksgiving Eve. While Dalia managed to get even scarier while planning the Thanksgiving dinner thanks to a new furry family member to torment her.

Revenge: Oh snap, not-Amy Abbott just outted herself to the childhood church that she was actually Amy Abbott, or something to that effect. But hopefully Amy first deals with the annoying best friend of a troll because he wore out his welcome a month ago. Or maybe she will kill two bird with one stone soon.

I Want My Music Television - 11/22/11

There have been a couple of videos that have caught my eye lately so I thought I’d give them some love since the death of Musical Television left a void for a forum on the art form. If you are interested in buying the video through iTunes, click the title link (where available). If you are interested in buying the song, look for a link in the analysis.

The Broken Ones - Dia Frampton



I was not that enthused with the orginal song Dia Frampton sang on The Voice and this is slightly better, but not as good as anything on Cocoon. The Peter Pan meets Lord of the Flies video. Does that make Dia Wendy or Simon?


Our Day Will Come – Amy Winehouse



Posthumous music videos are a weird proposition; you either have to go archival footage or someone do the lip-syncing instead. Seeing old Amy Winehouse videos and pictures is still a bit unsettling especially when her upcoming album seems like a pure cash grab.


The Shrine / An Argument - Fleet Foxes



A couple years ago, Fleet Foxes released a cool video for Mykonos and the new video looks to have the same animation style but with a more linear story. Just do not ask mean what it actually means.


Hit the Lights - Selena Gomez & the Scene



I wonder what is more ironic, that the new Selena Gomez & the Scene video looks like a glossier version of The Naked and Famous Young Blood video, that it sounds like every other pseudo-disco pop song on the radio right now, that she blatantly stole a line from Teenage Dream, the verses sound like leftover lines from a certain Alanis Morissette song, or that I kind of like it.

The Best New Shows of Fall 2011

Every year after the hubbub of all the new shows has died down, I like to look back and see which shows liked up to expectations and which ones did not. The networks already did a good job thinning the heard already with The Playboy Club, Free Agents, Charlie’s Angels, How to Be a Gentlemen, and H8R already canceled and being left off the midseason schedules do not bode well for Pan Am, Man Up, and Prime Suspects. With the holiday break fast approaching here are the shows you should be catching up on while everything is in repeats and where you can catch up at.

1. Homeland (Showtime)
Not just the best new show of the season, but the best show currently on television (at least until Justified returns). The crazier Claire Danes gets, the better the show is.

2. Suburgatory (ABC) iTunes – Amazon Instant Video - Hulu
Jane Levy is easily the breakout star of the season even if Emma Stone broke out with the same persona two years ago. And Dalia is easily the scariest thing on television, yes scarier than the zombies on The Walking Dead.

3. Revenge (ABC) iTunes – Amazon Instant Video - Hulu
I basically only started watching this show for Amy Abbott and she remained the only character I actually care about, yet this show is still extremely addictive.

4. Once Upon a Time (ABC) iTunes – Amazon Instant Video - Hulu
When I heard about this show (as well as Grimm) I was hoping for Pushing Daisies with fairytales but unfortunately we just got Lost with fairytales.

5. Two Broke Girls (CBS) CBS.com
Kat Dennings is comedy gold, but the rest of the cast certainly is not.


But who cares what I think, so I asked sometime contributor Doug, who apparently watched as many new shows this fall as I watched total, his thoughts and here is his favorite new shows of the fall.

1. 2 Broke Girls (CBS)
They need to get a new song for in-between songs. I'm already sick of it.

2. Revenge (ABC)
Classic trashy fun.

3. Suburgatory (ABC)

4. Ringer (The CW) iTunes – Amazon Instant Video - Hulu
Have no idea how they can keep this show going longer than 1 season.

5. Hart of Dixie (The CW) iTunes – Amazon Instant Video - Hulu
Cute throwback to the WB days. Hope The CW gives this time to develop.

57 Channels and Only This Is On - 11/20/11

Once Upon a Time: Do they really spoil one of the big mysteries of the show in the promo every week? It has been hinted at never outright said in the show that the Evil Queen knows of the fairytale world, but the preshow promo for the last two weeks comes right out and says she is the only one who remembers. Is this just the promo monkeys gone bad and making assumptions (which happened a couple times on Lost and the writers complained about), or are they actually spoiling the show?

The Walking Dead: We finally get a payoff at the farm with the discovery of the Walkers Barn. I take it that is the rest of his family that they are preserving in hopes that there will be a cure, though not as funny as the Shaun of the Dead ending. Which begs the question, when will Zombie Otis show up and join them?

Homeland: The first forty-five minutes of this episode seemed like filler, but boy did they kick it into high gear. First, Carrie come right out and accuses Brady of being a turncoat complete with a Q&A session (though some of answers seemed too convenient to be red herrings like him seeing the head terrorist and lying about it). Then we learn that his partner is actually the POW that got turned. Wow. That is really a long con to throw your scent off someone by putting it on his partner. Cannot wait until the next episode.

Pan Am: The more absurd this show is the better. Landing in hostel Haiti for a heart attack patient: sure why not. Hopefully in the near future there is an episode where someone draws landing gear onto the plane like the Amazing Stories episode.

How I Met Your Mother: The only thing that felt longer than Marshall and Ted’s trip for nachos was how I felt watching this episode. Seriously guys, it’s the comedy law of three not five.

The Sing Off: Screw you promo monkeys who made me sweat all week thinking Antoine Merriweather might be axed this week. Turns out his group was not even in the bottom two this week. Bad promo monkeys. Of course I knew there was no way the Aires would be sent home after watch the Ignition (Remix) because that was my favorite performance of the season. With the Judges’ Pick next week, my head might exploded if they actually give them Trapped in the Closet.

2 Broke Girls: This was a show I was really looking forward to, and even though it has been constantly funny so far, I was hoping for more and my disappointment mostly stems from Caroline who remains one note with a borderline annoying voice, but her White-Mariah routine was hilarious.

Parenthood: Is it wrong that I laughed historically at all of Sydney’s hissy fits. Quality entertainment. Though the ending of the storyline was a bit cheesy. But I knew as soon as Adam told Crosby not to hook up with the absurdly attractive receptionist, she would come onto him instead. Hopefully they do not fire her because she can just blame it on the alcohol and seriously Adam, you only escort a girl to her door if you are expecting a kiss.

Sons of Anarchy: Wait, did they actually blow up that one dude? But it looks like they are going to spread out the someone killing Clay out for the rest of the season. I fear every new episode until them will introduce someone new as the potential killer and next season we will be stuck with a Who Killed Clay storyline.

Survivor: South Pacific: It is about time Survivor finally realize that they should go two Tribal Councils per episode after the merge. Hopefully that continues for most of the rest of the season.

Revenge: I have long only liked Amy Abbott on the show, but they finally introduced a second character for me to root for: her alter-ego. She looks to give Claire Danes a run for her money in the crazy department.

The Big Bang Theory: I’m disappointed we were denied seeing Sheldon and Penny actually going on a date.

Community: When Jeff came onscreen as the Dean I actually thought that it was really David Cross. And I am sure I have said this before, but more Crazy Annie please.

Beavis and Butt-Head: Having the boys watch other television shows was mildly entertaining to begin with but they get less funny every week. I cannot believe I am actually going to suggest anyone watch Lady GaGa, but how have Beavis and Butt-Head not watched any of her videos yet? I need them to rip her to shreds.

Big News of the Week: NBC Announces its Midseason Schedule: The headlines coming out of the new NBC schedule was the lack of Community which was scuttered from the line up to make room for 30 Rock. In other comedy news, Up All Night is trading places with Whitney which NBC looks to be killing off putting the critically abused show in a rough timeslot without a chushy lead in that it has had. And it does not bode well for the Chelsea Handler sitcom to get the post-Whitney timeslot (I wonder what Vegas has the Over / Under for when Community and new show Bent replacing the duo because I would take the under at any point after Valentine’s Day).

On the drama side, Prime Suspect looks to be effectively canceled being left off the schedule with new show The Firm replacing it on Thursdays (but will have a two hour premiere Sunday January 8 at 9:00). Ratings anomaly Harry’s Law (which manages to be the networks most watch drama yet has the lowest rating in the most sought out advertising demo) moves to Sunday at 8:00 while Rock Center takes its old timeslot. And once again Parenthood will be ending its season early (February 28) to make room for something called Faison Star which sounds like something that should be airing on a basic cable channel like Bravo instead.

Oh yeah, and for those not already sick of the ads playing ad nausea: The Voice get the post-Super Bowl slot before settling in on Mondays and will be followed by Smash.

Free Download of the Week: Hundreds of Songs from Google Music: Google Music came out of beta this week in style with hundreds of free songs from artists ranging from John Mayer to Outkast to Living Colour to Bill Withers to Willie Nelson to an entire twenty-nine song live album from Pearl Jam and not one, but two free Dave Matthews Band live albums. Unlike beta, you can now download these songs to your computer. You can download tracks individually by clicking on them in your Google Music Library or with the Music Manager (you may have to reinstall it like I dide if there currently a “download” tab in the program). Granted now I have over 600 songs to download.

Video of the Week: You know you watch too much On Demand when you can recite a commercial word for word which I can do for The Muppets trailer because ABC On Demand has been airing it during every commercial break for the last month (and I watch four of their shows On Demand per week). And apparently the best way to avoid the naughty words in Cee-Lo’s Song Otherwise Known as Forget You is just to have it performed by animals that cannot actually sing it. And now here is a full version of the song performed by a bunch of chickens. Sadly no one was smart enough to change the title to Cluck You.

- Tonight at 9 on PBS (check your local listings) will be airing Woman Who Rock as part of their PBS Arts Fall Festival coming to you from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Look for interviews and live performances with Bessie Smith, Ma Raney, Mother Maybelle, and Mahalia Jackson as well as contemporary stars Darlene Love, Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, Bonnie Raitt, Cyndi Lauper, Wanda Jackson, Mavis Staples, Deborah Harry, and Kathleen Hanna of the bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre.

- We are closing in on the 48’s anniversary of John F. Kennedy and the National Geographic this Sunday at 9:00 will air JFK: The Lost Bullet which has restored some film from the day to a higher resolution than ever before which may explain the mystery of the missing bullet. - We are still two weeks away from ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas but for those looking for some holiday cheer before then, their Countdown to 25 Days of Christmas starts Sunday with Holiday in Handcuffs starting at 8:00.

- For those that can wait until December to start celebrating the holidays, on December 15 is TNT’s annual Christmas in Washington special and this year it will be hosted by Conan O’Brien with performances by Justin Bieber, Cee-Lo Green, Jennifer Hudson, Victoria Jackson, and the Band Perry.

Why Does Every Black Actor Gotta Rap Some? I Don’t Know, All I Know Is I’m the Best One

History is littered with actors who have tried their hand at music with little result because mostly they have all sucked massively. So it is easy to write all the future ones off as future sale bin with the Joey Lawrence, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Meadow Soprano. But I do not know if ringtone rappers have set the hip-hop so low that even a comedian can step over it, but Camp by Donald Glover of Community is one of the best rap albums of the year.

Recording as Childish Gambino (a name he got from a Wu-Tang Clan name generator) stays clear of overused clichés like auto-tune that have plagued rap on top forty station in recent years, there are no big name guest appearances (his slick singing style alleviates any need to bring on Bruno Mars to sing his hooks) or the flashy producer of the moment. Childish Gambino kicks it old school as an unabashed backpack rapper and even names a song after the hip-hop lifestyle even if Backpack features a much harder delivery then any A Tribe Called Quest track.

Camp is an unfortunate name for the album for a comedian trying to play it straight because there is nothing campy about the album. The title instead seems to refer to the noun where children go for the summer as there is plenty of themes about childhood and growing up throughout the album with Glover seems guilty for being black and growing up with a father. Topics like this make Childish Gambino the most boisterous self loather since Kanye West. But really the only topic he likes more is, um, how do I put this without annoying my censors; the completion of intercourse on things.

Much like Community which is constantly throwing pop culture references, Gambino has as many of his own on that rival the number on any Beastie Boys referencing everything from Rugrats to Mumford & Sons to Human Centipede (eww). As great a wordsmith Glover is, his high delivery style can get grating at times and the likeability of most songs are determined by how good the beat is (highlighted by standout track Bonefire), but others are only mediocre at best and nowhere as creative as his Adele sample of Melt Your Heart to Stone for his song Do You Like off his Culdesac mixtape.

Sure Duran Duran created the whole models in music videos scene, but how about casting some that are not current members of AARP? Each of them were featured in major music videos that came out in 1990. That is over two decades ago. Then again that is right around the time they had their last hit so the models of today may not even know who Duran Duran is.

Last week I called J Cole’s participation in the new Beyoncé video pretty bland, but as for his own music is anything but, for at least this song. I am not sure what is more bizarre: building a beat from the outro to California Love or the Paula Abdul quotes throughout the song.

The promo monkeys at The Sing-Off had me worried there for a while; seriously, how dare they even suggest Antoine Merriweather might have been voted out last night.
