The Five Most Anticipated Albums of Spring 2018

Someone pointed out to me that my list of the 100 Best Songs of 2017 was very chick heavy. Looking back at previous year end lists, it looked like a bit of an anomaly with the fairer sex lucky to make up a quter of previous list. But looking at my most anticipated music of this spring, maybe it was not an anomaly but a trend because most albums I am looking forward to are by female singer. Here are five albums I am really looking forward to over the next couple months

1. Love Is Dead - Chvrches (May 25) - There used to be a sophomore slump, but I wonder if maybe the third album is the hardest. If you have a great sound, you can just duplicate that on your second album and still have it sound good. But it is hard to stretch it into three albums without sounding tired. Chvrches released two very good album based around melodic electronic sounds. From the first single they did not sound like they were switching things up but things got a little more interesting with the second single where they brought into the singer from The National whos voice is a start difference to that of the Chvrches singer. Hopefully the album takes more chances.

2. No Shame - Lily Allen (June 8) - Speaking of third albums, Sheesuz was a turning point for Lily Allen. It seemed like half of the songs were he same snotty songs that she sculpted to perfection of her first two albums, but the other showed huge growth with a more mature Lily. I am actually hoping for more maturity from her fourth outing.

3. Dirty Computer - Janelle Monáe (April 28) - Janelle Monoe started out as this weird alt-RnB songstress but her latest Prince inspired song, Make Me Feel, may be the catchiest pop song you hear this year but still does not lose that coolness from her early work.

4. Golden Hour - Kacey Musgraves (March 30) - Musgraves is also on that tricky third album. Except her second album was a bit rougher. But both singles released from the new album definitely do not sound anything like the down home songs from the first two albums.

5. When My Heart Felt Volcanic - The Aces (April 6) - Rock's demised has been discussed for a while now, but one causality that does not really get talked about is that pop rock or power pop is pretty dead. Whether you consider it pop with a little edge or rock with a heavy dose of sugar, you just do not hear that anymore. Here are four friends from Utah, just a guitar, bass, and drums, and no weird computer sounds to be heard. Very familiar but very refreshing since no one does it anymore.

Here are a bunch of album that will at the very least be worth a spin on Spotify including the first album from a nineties one hit wonder, their first since that decades, and a bizarre collaboration from an eighties New Wave singer and nineties reggae artist.

2018 Winter Music Preview

It is the usual ho hum nothing too much to get excited about winter music preview. The most interesting artists are all listed in the TBA section which probably means we will not actually get any new music from them until summer. Then I read an article with Dr. Dre saying Detox is not entirely dead. To catch people up, after releasing 2001 in 1999, Dre started working on Detox, which he claimed to be his last album. And it kept being pushed back. Even Guns 'n Roses managed to release Chinese Democracy first. Then Dre popped up in a Dr. Pepper commercial in 2009 (ironically the same brand that said every person in America would get a free can if Chinese Democracy came out the previous year; granted I never got my free can because the website was down and have not Dr. Pepper since out of spite) making everyone think this was the start of the Detox campaign. Kush was then release the following to general meh. Same with I Need a Doctor the next year. And once again Detox was shelved. Word then broke that Dre was releasing music inspired by the biopic Straight Outta Compton in 2015, except that was all new music and not Detox. And it seemed Detox was dead. Until last week when Dre dropped by a Golden State Warrior practice and an ESPN reporter asked if Detox is permanently shelved to which the producer replied, "I’m working on a couple songs right now. We’ll see." We have been waiting for Detox fifteen years now, and there is a chance we will hear it someday. Sure it may not be until after he is dead and his next of kin needs more money, but someday. Never give up hope. But here are that we will definitely (probably) get to hear this year. 2017 Fall Music Preview

Two things that really stood out to this nineties child when giving a once over to the list of albums coming out this fall. First off we are getting dueling Gallagher albums! Okay, this would have been much more exciting if this were 1997 not 2017. And the other thing was an album being released by some guy named William Patrick Corgan. If you have not figured it out yet, that is Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan. Apparently he thought Deborah Gibsn's name change was not silly enough so he also added the middle name. In other ninties news, Beck is coming out with a fun album after his super depressing Album of the Year one, Wu-Tang Clan is back with an album anyone can buy, while U2 is also back to making people buying albums again. Oh, and Hootie of the Blowfish fame is still putting out country music while Primus is back with their original lineup since 1995. And of course Weezer is back with their bi-yearly release of disapointing tracks. In other artists you probably did not realize were still releasing music news, oh, hey, Barenaked Ladies, Boyz II Men, and Seal.

I spent so much time on the nineties because as usually I am mostly meh on current music. I have enjoyed what I have heard from the upcoming Jessie Ware album and Jillian Jaqcqueline and Carly Pearce are a breath of fresh air in country pop music along with Danielle Bradbery who put out a track I kind of like (though weird to release a song called Hello Summer on the first day of fall) but that is about it. I will give at least a Spotify stream to these albums. You can pre-order the albums by clicking the album title or go to their iTunes page by clicking on the artists name.

2017 Spring Music Preview

Oh wow, looking over the list of albums coming out this spring that I am kind of excited about. Sure not enough to make a most anticipated list, but it is inching that way. I already went on about the return of Michelle Branch dung the winter preview, then add to that Lorde and Fleet Foxes. It has been four years since Lorde debuted and changed the pop landscape and it sound like it has changed her too with two big piano based songs replacing her drum heavy sound of her first album. I has been six years since Fleet Foxes put out the excellent Helplessness Blues and it does not sound like they have chance much. Of course both albums are supposed to drop on the same day. Here is a list of other albums coming out in the next couple months that will at least be worthy of a spin on Spotify. 2017 Winter Music Preview

This is usually the time where I decry the death of the music industry and the lack of any marquee albums coming out in the near future, but I am not going to do that this time (well, I guess I kind of did) because I am actually kind of excited for something (supposedly) coming out soon: the new album by Michelle Branch. Her debut album Teh Spirit Room was one of the greatest pop-rock albums of all time and number five on my list of The 100 Greatest Albums of the 00's. Her sophomore was pretty good (#39) then she went country with her duo The Wreckers who released one album... then nothing. That album was 2006, Hotel Paper was 2003. Okay there was an EP seven years ago but there were also two aborted albums. Now she is on a new label and it seems like the album, produced by The Black Keys Patrick Carney, may actually be released. But hey, fourteen years my sound like a long time to wait for a third album, Bell Biv DeVoe is dropping their third today, twenty-four after their second. Wait, Spotify is saying they actually on their fourth and released an album in 2001... who knew. But anyway. Here is a list of albums coming out the next couple months that will at least be worthy of a listen on Spotify.
