Previewing Do No Harm
Sometimes it seems like the only drama on network television are about cops, doctors or lawyers. Last year NBC tried to shake up one of those genres with Awake where a cop lived two separate lives, one where his wife survived a car accident, the other his son. I pondered at the time who would watch the show? Procedural fans would be scared off by the weird sci-fi element and sci-fi fans would stay away from a procedural. It turns out I was right as the show died a slow and little watched death before being canceled.
Not to be deterred, NBC announced another Awake sounding show last fall and will be airing it at the same day at the same time of the year that Awake aired. But instead of living in two different realities, the main character in Do No Harm lives two different lives. Yep he has a split personality. And instead of being a cop, it is another television trope of being a Doctor (this is a updated version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde).
Steve Pasquale fills the shoes of the brilliant neurosurgeon and his evil counterpoint. He was arguably the most consistently entertaining actor on Rescue Me always ready for some great comic relief but really does not pull off the dual role on the show. The best parts are when he is the evil version which tends to be humorous for the most part, but I am not entirely sure if that is intentional. Also included in the cast are the underused (at least in the premiere) are Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show) as his boss and Samm Levine (Not Another Teen Movie). The always attractive Alana de la Garza (Law and Order which means she is now a cop away from hitting the procedural trifecta) as a fellow doctor who catches the eye of both personalities.
Do No Harm starts off with the good doctor keeping his alter ego suppressed for the past five years with medication. The only problem is that the evil half has built up immunity to the drug and has five years worth of debauchery to get to. With the drugs no longer working, the good doctor homes to make a truce with his bad half to do no harm, which I do not think will go over well. And do not ask me why the doctor does not lock himself up every night like a werewolf. The two switch places at 8:25 in the morning and the evening each day (there is a humorous suggestion about moving across the globe so they can experience different times of the day).
Like Awake, Do No Harm has an interesting concept, but much like Awake, it is doubtful Do No Harm gets a second season, and I am not sure it will end up all of its episodes.
Do No Harm airs Thursdays at 10:00 on NBC. You will be able to stream recent episodes after they air on Hulu. You will also be able to download Do No Harm on iTunes where you can currently download the premiere already for free.

I Won’t Treat You Like You’re oh so Typical
When you hear the name Tegan and Sara you probably conjure up adjectives like folky, moody, and / or lesbian. But like indie queen Liz Phair before them, being indie darlings does not do a very good job at paying the bills. Despite six well received albums, the sisters never managed to have a hit songs on the charts here stateside and were not even able to get one until their last album in their Canadian homeland. They look to change that with the release of the decisively more poppy seventh album Heartthrob.
Much like when I first heard Phair’s no longer being exiled in guyville pop turn with Why Can’t I, my first thought when I heard Closer, the first single off of Heartthrob, was, this is catchy, but I feel a little dirty considering the source. But where Phair when full mainstream on those album with songs of the chick rock pop of the early 00’s, Tegan and Sara travel back to the syth-pop mainstream of the 80’s (and carried on today by bands like Metric).
To get this sound they brought in producer Greg Kurstin of The Bird and the Bee who gave a similar sound to It's Not Me, It's You - Lily Allen’s sophomore album. The problem though is the album sounds too homogeneous and even at just over a half an hour it starts to drag on eventually with the lack of diversity. Heartthrob manages to draw the line very well where they are poised to pick up more pop minded fans without alienating their core fan base, but I’ll probably continue to walk with the ghost instead.
Song to Download – Closer
Heartthrob gets a on my Terror Alert Scale.

Previewing Diggers
After the History mini-series, the Hatfields & McCoys are having a big comeback of sorts into pop culture. The feud’s biggest climax, the New Year’s Day Massacre where the Hatfield’s burned down the McCoy homestead in the hopes of killing the patriarch celebrated its 125th anniversary this year. Surprisingly in those 125 years, no one has found where the two story McCoy house once stood. In fact no artifacts have been dug up before. Until now.
The new National Geographic Channel show Diggers are traveling to the Kentucky / West Virginia border to uncover long lost artifacts from the time of the feud including where the former home of the McCoy’s once stood. The diggers in the title are George “KG” Wyant and Tim “Ringy” Saylor are amateur scientists. Indiana Jones these guys are not, as they are armed with nothing but metal detectors and a shovel. But they are easily excited but each and every find and have created their own lingo for when they are out digging (do not worry, they definition pop up on the screen to help you out).
Ironically the land where the McCoy’s once lived is now owned by a descendant of the Hatfeild’s. Wyant and Saylor do find a bunch of bullet fragments that they believe could have been from the New Year’s Day Massacre and think they have found where the house of the McCoy’s once stood. You will have to turn in to see if actually archaeologist confirm that they found are the remains of the McCoy homestead.
Diggers airs Tuesdays at 10:00 on the National Geographic Channel with back to back episodes.

Previewing Dallas 2.x
Let’s go ahead and get this out of the way first: the great Larry Hagman passed away in the middle of filming the second season of Dallas. Which means this will be the last time we will see one of the great all time television villains of all time on screen. My sources tell me that the funeral for J.R. Ewing will be held during the eighth episode of the season, set to air March 11 which will feature many Dallas vets, some of which have yet to appear on the new version.
No word on how they will deal with J.R.’s death on screen (or if we will be getting another Who Shot J.R. mystery), but the character certainly is not going out with a whimper. Like last season the elder Ewing still has the best lines (like his distaste for the amount of male secretaries at Ewing Enterprises) and is still doing plenty of double dealings and manages in a couple blackmails for good measure just in the two hour premiere tonight.
When we left off, Christopher learned that his wife as not the Rebecca Sutter he thought he married and we learned that she was the real offspring of the Ewing’s bane Cliff Barnes (which would have made the newlyweds, if I am reading the family tree right, cousins by adoption). Christopher reluctantly teamed up with his other cousin (in a less skevy way) when him, J.R. Jr. and Bobby created Ewing Energies.
The new season starts up a couple weeks later, Rebecca (get ready to call her by a new name this season) has been in hiding ever since Christopher learned she was not who she seemed. It is on the eve of the election and by the end of the night you will learn if Sue Ellen will be the next governor of Texas. But the most interesting part of the new season involves Assistant Director Walter Skinner, who was promoted to the series regular this season, who pulls something tonight that is more shocking than anything that happened in the first season (which is saying a lot). And just when you wonder how someone could get so evil, we meet his mother, Judith Light, who is definitely the Boss in the family.
Dallas airs Mondays at 9:00 on TNT. You can download previous episodes of Dallas on iTunes.

57 Channels and Only This Is On - 1/27/12
Once Upon a Time: I do not understand why Belle does not remember who Mr. Gold is, I thought if they cross the city line they only forget the fairytale land but still remember Storybrooke. I guess I should not assume that the writers of Lost would remember their own rules. Also, no one cares about Dr. Frankenstein.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Once Upon a Time on iTunes.
Shameless: It looks like we are going to get a power struggle within the Gallagher family as Fiona tries to do things the right way while Lip continues to do it the way the family always has, stealing and scamming. Being that this is Shameless, I have a feeling Lip’s way will win out because I really doubt that Fiona will continue at a loss just to try to dig her way out of her situation. When Frank came back from Mexico I wondered where he landed because he already got kicked out of Sheila’s, his family would not take him back, and the last person he cohabitated with died. Apparently it is back to Shelia’s house, but I still do not see that lasting long.
How I Met Your Mother: Wait, Barney’s half sister is Hanna from Pretty Little Liars? Was this common knowledge? I vaguely remember Barney learning his dad was John Lithgow but I do not remember ever meeting his sister. And how did Lithgow possibly produce someone who looks like Hanna? But I have to admit, I kind of would like Hanna to be the mother.
You can stream recent episodes over at CBS.com. You can also download How I Met Your Mother on iTunes.
Bunheads: I do not really care about what happened this week because all I can remember is the promo for next week featuring roller derby. Awesome.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Bunheads on iTunes.
Castle: Hasn’t the show already done a Girls Gone Wild episode? Or is it just every other crime show has done one and it just seems like everyone has done one at this point?
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Castle on iTunes.
Pretty Little Liars: Allison was extremely busy on her last day (assuming that Aria was hallucinating and really is dead). She had a sleepover with the Liars, met with that dude who is now dead, had a run in with Jenna and Garrett, blackmailed Mr. Montgomery, and now Melissa is the last person to see her alive. At least until Melissa saw Allison with someone else. I am sure at some point we will learn she had a run-in with Ezra who was not even living there at the time before meeting her demise.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Pretty Little Liars on iTunes.
The Lying Game: I feel a little cheated we did not get a full tennis match between Emma and Sutton, that could have been the whole episode and I would have been fine with it. On the bright side, no more Thayer, he overstayed his welcome a long time ago.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download The Lying Game on iTunes.
Justified: So it turns out Robert Quarrels’ Detroit boss has been taking some trips down to Dixie because his name interestingly came up during the interrogation scene this week. One thing that is not interesting is the whole snake preacher storyline. I am ready for the to end anytime now.
You can download Justified on iTunes.
Parenthood: Those Braverman’s are really a fertile bunch (except for Julia of course). That makes nine grandkids for Zeke (not even including Drew’s mistake). That makes three pregnancies and an adoption in four seasons. I would project Sarah gets knocked up next season, except she picked the dude who went to Minnesota (seriously, who goes from California to Minnesota, the Lakers made the right transition). Maybe Amber is up next.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Parenthood on iTunes.
Nashville: I really liked seeing Rayna and Juliette going at each other on tour these last couple episode, but it is only get better throwing Deacon in the mix… in Juliette’s band. The only way it could get better if they hired both Avery and whatever they are calling Scarlett’s new band as opening acts.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Nashville on iTunes.
Last Resort: I guess you really cannot say the ending was rushed because it obviously was as they had to cram an entire series into the last couple episodes. But I am still a bit disappointed we never learned of the conspiracy as to why the president did what he did. Was he just an evil Neo-Con? But it is clear that the that the show would have benefitted had it just been a six episode or so miniseries because it started out strong and came on at the end when they realized it would be canceled, but really dragged in-between.
You can stream recent episodes on Last Resort on iTunes.

Best of the Week - 1/26/13
Quote of the Week: Break out the white sunglasses and the Dane Cook CD because you and I are going out raging tomorrow night with the Douchebag Twins! (Marty Kaan, House of Lies)
Song of the Week: One Week – Barenaked Ladies (as sung by Sheila’s Pets, Suburgatory)
Scene of the Week:
Big News of the Week: Barck Obama Inaugurated... Again: Can someone explain to me why a sitting president needs to be swore in again at the beginning of his second term? Is once not enough? Just seems like a waste of time and money. But if there is one thing the government is good at it is wasting time and money.
Preview Picture of the Week:
Dallas Season 2 Premiere Monday at 9:00 on TNT |
Free Download of the Week: True North – Bad Religion (iTunes)
Deal of the Week: Babel (Deluxe Edition) by Mumford and Sons for only $3.99.
New Album Release of the Week: Heartthrob - Tegan and Sara
New DVD Release of the Week: Pan Am - The Complete Series
Video of the Week: A week and a half until the triumphant return of Community (sans creator Dan Harmon and Chevy Chase who followed him out near the end of filming the season). To tide you over the final twelve days of its hiatus, here is a musical mash-up from the show.
Next Week Pick of the Week: The Americans, Wednesday at 10:00 on FX: As we enter this cold winter without Homeland, we have to find something to keep us warm until its return in September. Hopefully The Americans can fill the void even though instead of the CIA, it is the KGB… in the eighties. But if it is half as good as Homeland, or network-mate Justified, I will be happy. I just have a fear that Keri Russell will have me rooting for the Russians by the end of the season.

2013 Winter Music Preview
Looking at the albums to be released early this year makes you wonder if many in the music industry thought the Mayans may have been right and rushed out all the albums close to competition before the December 21 apocalypse because it is some pretty bare pickings. Most of the anticipated releases for the year are in the dubious “TBD” category which means we will probably not be hearing them until summer at the earliest, and maybe not until the pre-holiday window. I Want My Music Television - 1/23/13
There have been a couple of videos that have caught my eye lately so I thought I’d give them some love since the death of Musical Television left a void for a forum on the art form. If you are interested in buying the video through iTunes, click the title link (where available). If you are interested in buying the song, look for a link in the analysis.
I think we may be nearing the end of the lyric video phenomenon because I actually had an adverse reaction after watching this one from Tristan Prettyman. Seeing the lyrics and them being realize literally (bananas!) with images just made me see just how creepy the song really is.
I like both Colbie Caillat and Gavin DeGraw but this is a pretty boring song. It probably does not help that the movie it is from, Safe Haven, looks painfully bad. But I guess that should not be much of a surpise considering it was based on a book by Nicholas Sparks who have us the abominations that were Dear John, The Last Song, and The Lucky One.
Whoa Nelly Furtado, you got some bad advice from whoever told you the 2-face skeleton paint would work. It makes the accordion solo look like a great idea in comparison.
I was pretty content ignoring the Alice in Chains reboot when they released a new album a couple years ago. I really enjoyed the band back in the day because I loved the dichotomy of the angsty Laine Staley against the more melodic Jerry Cantrell. But I guess I going to have to acknowledge the new incarnation now that they are going to release a new album. The thirteen year old version of me does not like it at all.

They Didn't Discover This Modern America, They Built It
We have all heard of Vanderbilt University, Rockefeller Center, Carnegie Hall, JP Morgan Chase, and Ford Motors, but there namesake had more to shape America than even your history teacher would have you believe. They became the first men in America more powerful than the president (and even bought one of them) and gave us what would become the foundation of America in the twentieth century: railways, oil, steel, electricity, and the automobile. Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, Henry Ford were the basis of History’s The Men Who Built America.
The series took place over the five decades in between the Civil War and the First World War when the industrial revolution propelled the United States into a super power it remains today. Spread over eight episodes (the series was originally aired in four two hour segments, but has been cut done to an hour for the home video release) it follows those five men as they compete with each other while using each other product in a battle to become the richest man in the world. Really it mainly follows the middle three as Vanderbilt dies early on and Ford does not show up until the last episode to introduce the same work practices that are used today.
The mini-series is narrator by Campbell Scott and features commentary from historian and some of today’s most notable entrepreneurs and businessmen like Donald Trump, Mark Cuban, Jack Welsh, and Alan Greenspan. Even though many of Men lived over a decade ago it is amazing the parallels to today. You have the liberal unions taking on the guns for hire conservatives of the Pinkertons. When Rockefeller testifies in front of Congress in defense of his shady business practices actually said he was just a figurehead at his own company during some illegal or just immoral times almost word for word excuses that Mitt Romney had when confronted about Bain Capital. But the most obvious parallel to these times was the election of 1896 where the Men Who Built America, in a rare bit of collusion, pulled their wealth together to buy the president, the difference being they actually were successful (that and the South voted for the Democrat while the Republican candidate swept New England). Ironically they were undone when their president was assassinated and his replacement brought anti-trust lawsuits against the big businesses at the time (which makes you wonder what modern day Roosevelt Republican will have the guts to brake up today’s too big to fail banks).
The Men Who Built America is a fascinating narrative on a period that is quickly rushed by near the end of the school year in history class. It is filled with plenty of fascinating tales, like how Carnegie recruited an elephant to prove that his bridge across the Mississippi, the largest at the time, was safe to travel across. Even funny at times, like Morgan and Rockefeller trading Christmas presents. And even horrifying like when Thomas Edison, as bankrolled by Morgan, invented the electric chair just to make his rival Nikola Tesla look bad. Which begs the question, when does Tesla get his own movie? He keeps showing up in during stories in this time period, ends up being the most interesting figure, but has never gotten the starring role himself.
The blu-ray (the press release who have me to believe the DVD version have the exact same features) features three disks with the first featuring the episodes A New War Begins, Oil Strike, A and Rivalry Is Born. The second hosts Blood Is Spilled, A New Rival Emerges, and Owning it All. The third disk has the final two episodes Taking the White House and The New Machine. Each disk features a couple never before seen on TV clips which combine to around twenty-six extra minutes.
Full Disclosure Notice: This Blu-ray was given to me by Lionsgate for review.

57 Channels and Only This Is On - 1/20/13
Once Upon a Time: Just how long was Prince Phillip hanging out with Mulan because I wonder if Sleeping Beauty has something to worry about. Seems like that relationship has being going on for much longer than they let on.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Once Upon a Time on iTunes.
Revenge: How did I not see Rebecca Logan being evil ahead of time? Dilly me, let my guard down on that one. Poor Nolan, no matter which team he bats for, he gets beamed with the baseball. But it was pretty obvious that Emily and Aiden set up that kidnapping to get in the Initiative’s good graces.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Revenge on iTunes.
Castle: Of course the rapper brought his lighting guy to the precinct.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Castle on iTunes.
Deception: Are we really to believe a ruthless businessman who would go to great lengths to keep his secret, even have a gardener beat up a relative to keep her quiet, would have such an easy to guess password. And this happens all the time on these types of shows. At least have some computer nerd give them some cracking program. I would even find it even more believable if they kept their password taped to the bottom of their stapler.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Deception on iTunes.
Pretty Little Liars: I was a bit weary with the newly semi-rehabilitated (but probably not) Mona last week, but I am fully on board and now Mona is my second favorite character after Hanna. Mona is just playing these girls like a fiddle and I love every minute of it because she is plying chess while the Liars are playing checkers. But I am not liking Byron’s evil heel turn. The only way it could get cheesier and more clichĂ© is if Byron hits Aria over the head with a steel chair and then rips off his shirt to reveal a “The A-Team” t-shirt underneath.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Pretty Little Liars on iTunes.
Justified: When the matriarch of the Truth clan stepped out of her house I thought, oh no they are going to recreate the Bennett clan. The actress was even played by someone everyone would recognize but has no clue what her name is. By the time the Marshal’s left, I was kind of sad that it may be the only time we will see the molestation fearing Truth family again. Although I am sure they will find a way to reincorporate them until Raylan has to put one of them down. Even Winn managed to find his way back to Harlen, unfortunately not with the armless Robert Quarrels (who I am officially presuming as dead now but I will hold on to a sliver of hope that he shows up in my proposed Harlen County Prison spin-off) in tow because Winn’s reactions to his craziness was always a highlight of last season.
You can download Justified on iTunes.
Parenthood: So if they put in a “healthy” vending machine, where did the students get all those Skittles to shower Max with? I guess the convenient stores are still getting a big share of the allowance money.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Parenthood on iTunes.
Modern Family: Note to the promo monkeys, do not say the show will end with a surprise you will not see coming followed by a baby crying considering Gloria has looked like she was ten months pregnant all season. It would had only been a surprise if Haley was one of those idiots from I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant and gave birth instead and it turned out Gloria was just bloated. Either that or Al Bundy had yet another season that was just a dream wher he thought his wife was pregnant.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Modern Family on iTunes.
Subugatory: They really need to get Tessa hopped up on drugs more often. As Claire Danes showed us (notice the great Homeland reference?), crazy is extreme entertaining.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Suburgatory on iTunes.
Nashville: I feel cheated that they did not force the tour with Rayna and Juilette earlier because the show is much more entertaining when they go toe to toe in a game of one-upmanship. Although I am not sure the tour will last long because I have a feeling Vegas would have the number of shows at 5. It will probably be as productive as the famous Metallica / Guns n Roses joint tour back in the early ninties.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Nashville on iTunes.
Last Resort: Holy frack! Winston Zedmore shot himself on live television. Or as close to live television as C-Span gets. But that is one way to drive up the ratings.
You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Last Resort on iTunes.

Best of the Week - 1/19/13
Quote of the Week: But I don't even trust the way you just now said I could trust you. (Winn Duffy, Justified)
Song of the Week: (They Long to Be) Close to You – Carpenters (as sung by the Bee Girl, House of Lies)
Scene of the Week:
Big News of the Week: Lance Armstrong Is a Lying Liar: Also how bizarre is the Notre Dame Football player / fake girlfriend story? Way too many inconsistencies to believe. Just a bad week for sports as a whole especially considering the AFC will be sending to the Super Bowl one of my three least favorite teams. Guess I will be rooting for the NFC like usual.
Preview Picture of the Week:
Bunheads "I'll Be Your Meyer Lansky" Monday at 9:00 on ABC Family |
Free Download of the Week: Introduction – Holly Williams (Noise Trade)
Deal of the Week: $2.99 Albums: Amazon is having an unadvertised sale with a lot of classic albums for only $2.99 including Thiller, Born in the U.S.A., At Folsom Prison, and Under the Table and Dreaming. So stock up while you can because thesale may end as soon as it started.
New Album Release of the Week: 12-12-12 The Concert for Sandy Relief (2 CDs)
New DVD Release of the Week: The Men Who Built America
Video of the Week: Almost two decades ago Harmony Korine wrote a warped script about kids in America called, well, Kids. He was not far removed from being a kid himself at a time. Now forty, he has written (and this time directed) another film about kids, but instead of casting relative unknowns, this time around he raided the Disney line up with Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place), Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical), and Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars, which airs on ABC Family which is also owned by Disney). Spring Breakers looks glossier than Kids, but looks like it will be just as warped. Oh yeah, it also stars a cornrowed James Franco.
Next Week Pick of the Week: Parenthood, Tuesday at 10:00 on NBC: If it seems like every season of Parenthood gets shorter and shorter, you are not paranoid, this season comes to a close this week after only fifteen episodes, three less than last year and seven less than season two. But as the cable model shows longer is not necessary better and the show remains the best drama on network television and hopefully returns next season to defend its title.

Around the Tubes - 1/18/13
I have gotten a plethora of cool press releases have been flooding my inbox recently that you may find interesting. This post will include blurbs on Do No Harm, Defiance, TNT, A Brief History of Mine, Sherlock Changed the World, American Masters Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Godmother of Rock & Roll, After Words, and Iron Man: Armored Adventures.
- Why wait until January 31 to watch the premiere of Do Not Harm? You can watch it now below or download from iTunes for free.
- It seems like Syfy is releasing a new Defiance trailer or preview every week, here is the latest one ahead of the April 15 debut:
