Best of the Week - 11/19/11
Quote of the Week: You think you can get by with your Justin Bieber hairdo and your Invisaline braces, guess what, puberty is gonna set in and it is gonna set in ugly. Be a friend; be a friend not a bully. (Kristina, Parenthood)
Song of the Week: Someone Like You – Adele (Saturday Night Live)
Gratuitous Token Hot Chick Picture of the Week:
Scene of the Week:
Big News of the Week: NBC Announces its Midseason Schedule: The headlines coming out of the new NBC schedule was the lack of Community which was scuttered from the line up to make room for 30 Rock. In other comedy news, Up All Night is trading places with Whitney which NBC looks to be killing off putting the critically abused show in a rough timeslot without a chushy lead in that it has had. And it does not bode well for the Chelsea Handler sitcom to get the post-Whitney timeslot (I wonder what Vegas has the Over / Under for when Community and new show Bent replacing the duo because I would take the under at any point after Valentine’s Day).
On the drama side, Prime Suspect looks to be effectively canceled being left off the schedule with new show The Firm replacing it on Thursdays (but will have a two hour premiere Sunday January 8 at 9:00). Ratings anomaly Harry’s Law (which manages to be the networks most watch drama yet has the lowest rating in the most sought out advertising demo) moves to Sunday at 8:00 while Rock Center takes its old timeslot. And once again Parenthood will be ending its season early (February 28) to make room for something called Faison Star which sounds like something that should be airing on a basic cable channel like Bravo instead.
Oh yeah, and for those not already sick of the ads playing ad nausea: The Voice get the post-Super Bowl slot before settling in on Mondays and will be followed by Smash.
Free Download of the Week: Hundreds of Songs from Google Music: Google Music came out of beta this week in style with hundreds of free songs from artists ranging from John Mayer to Outkast to Living Colour to Bill Withers to Willie Nelson to an entire twenty-nine song live album from Pearl Jam and not one, but two free Dave Matthews Band live albums. Unlike beta, you can now download these songs to your computer. You can download tracks individually by clicking on them in your Google Music Library or with the Music Manager (you may have to reinstall it like I dide if there currently a “download” tab in the program). Granted now I have over 600 songs to download.
New Album Release of the Week: My Life II: The Journey Continues, Act 1 [Deluxe Edition] - Mary J. Blige
New DVD Release of the Week: Three Amigos [Blu-ray]
Video of the Week: You know you watch too much On Demand when you can recite a commercial word for word which I can do for The Muppets trailer because ABC On Demand has been airing it during every commercial break for the last month (and I watch four of their shows On Demand per week). And apparently the best way to avoid the naughty words in Cee-Lo’s Song Otherwise Known as Forget You is just to have it performed by animals that cannot actually sing it. And now here is a full version of the song performed by a bunch of chickens. Sadly no one was smart enough to change the title to Cluck You.
Next Week Pick of the Week: Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, 9AM on NBC: It is the 85’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade and they are pulling out all the stops this year because I actually recognize some of the names. This year you can look out for Stars joining the festivities this year include Rodney Atkins, the Big Apple Circus, Mary J. Blige, Cobra Starship, Neil Diamond, Michael Feinstein, The Fresh Beat Band, Cee Lo Green, Avril Lavigne, Shelby Lynne, Mannheim Steamroller, China Anne McClain, Scotty McCreery, Ingrid Michaelson, the cast of The Muppets, Savannah Outen, Power Rangers Samurai, cast of Broadway's Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Daniel Radcliffe and the cast of Broadway's How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Willard Scott, cast of Broadway's Sister Act, cast of Broadway's Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Straight No Chaser, US Naval Academy Glee Club, Johnny Weir, and Zendaya. In addition, the telecast will feature a special performance from the world-famous "Radio City Rockettes." And if that is not enough Parade for you, later that night NBC is running a special on the Parade at 10:00.

I Want My Music Television - 10/10/11
There have been a couple of videos that have caught my eye lately so I thought I’d give them some love since the death of Musical Television left a void for a forum on the art form. If you are interested in buying the video through iTunes, click the title link (where available). If you are interested in buying the song, look for a link in the analysis.
I love the sparseness of the video to go with the sparseness of the song. Though it is still at its best when you just close your eyes and listen to the voice of Adele.
Seizer alert! I do not know if Beyoncé went with a frantic video to distract from her baby bump, but it seriously hurt my head. And maybe I miss it in the middle of my convulsion, but this video was seriously missing a Boyz II Men reference (for the kiddies who do not know what I am talking about, head over to iTunes and download Uhh Ahh).
Hot chicks and guns: it as if Mayer Hawthorne made this video just for me. I am too lazy to look it up, but I am pretty sure that is the Token Hot Chick from The Event. Even though it is an obvious Mr & Mrs Smith homage, they are both such a bad shots, they might as well have been in an episode of The A-Team.
If this song is any indication, the new Florence + The Machine album should be epic, but am not really digging the Eyes Wide Shut styled video.

57 Channels and Only This Is On - 9/3/11
Quote of the Week: Does anybody know what tonight is… Lower your hand if you are going to say the season finale of Glee, I (expletive deleted) hate that show. (Captain Dashall, Death Valley)
Song of the Week: Someone Like You – Adele (Video Music Awards)
Big News of the Week: Video Music Awards Still Make Me Feel Old: I actually missed watching the show live because when I tuned in I thought the MTV feed somehow got mixed up with a local access channel airing the worst community theater version of Streetcar Named Desire ever. So I went ahead and watched Leverage instead. I realized my mistake when I watched a re-air of the show. Oops. Here are some thoughts:
- Best performances of the night in this order: Adele, Kanye West and Jay-Z, Young the Giant, Beyoncé.
- Oddest moment of the night goes to Britney Spears who in lieu of giving an acceptance speech for the Video Vanguard Award just introduced Beyoncé.
- I feel as if we failed as a society if Chris Brown is allowed to perform on a national stage. Dude should be trolling in relative obscurity by now; it is not like the guy has much talent to get away with all the crap he has pulled. And who does he think he’s fooling by wearing the drive thru microphone? A four year old could tell he was not really singing.
- The Amy Winehouse tribute was weird all around considering she never once appeared on the show (she was set to appear with the house band during the disastrous Las Vegas experiment but had her visa rejected) and rarely even appeared on the channel and just released one album anyone cared about. Then Bruno Mars chose to perform an obscure (at least here stateside) Mark Ronson cover of a Zutons song that Winehouse sang on instead of one of her own songs.
- Lastly, and this is for all award shows, not just the VMA’s, stop inviting artists to perform if every third word you are going to bleep out anyway. And if you are an artist who curses every third word, either chose a different song or change your lyrics, because it may seem like artistic integrity to perform your song as is, but it just comes off as a really crappy performance on television.
Leverage: Holy Dr. Abbot sighting! But I am disappointed in myself that I did not realize the chick was Sterling’s daughter, they really beat you over the head with those hints. You can stream recent episodes on TNT.tv. You can also download Leverage on iTunes.
The Lying Game: The dude from Heroes remains to be the most interesting character on the show (how he was not in the Pilot is befuddling), him showing up in Los Angeles was really creepy. And I am beginning to wonder if either of his kids are his, neither of them look much lke him (but that could just be casting directors not caring). You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download The Lying Game on iTunes.
Pretty Little Liars: I cannot believe I just made my first ever Better Than Ezra joke during my mid-season wrap up of the show (see Two Can Keep a Secret if One of The Is Dead). I rally dropped the pop culture ball on that one. I promise when the show comes back, I will make at least one Better Than Ezra joke for every episode he is in. You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Pretty Little Liars on iTunes.
Rescue Me: I have longed believed that Tommy would not make it to the end of the show and that one other fireman would die this season. But it never crossed my mind that they would kill off the entire crew. You can stream recent episodes on Hulu. You can also download Rescue Me on iTunes.
Free Download of the Week: Ghost on the Canvas - Glen Campbell (iTunes)
Deal of the Week: 100 Albums for $5: This week you can get albums by Mumford and Sons, Coldplay, Eric Clapton, and Carrie Underwood for five dollars.
New Album Release of the Week: In The Grace Of Your Love - The Rapture
New DVD Release of the Week: Community: The Complete Second Season
Video of the Week: Mel Brookes and Dick Cavett have been chatting it up for four decades and now they are doing it one more time for an HBO special to air this Friday at 9:00. Here is a sneak peak:
Next Week Pick of the Week: Rescue Me, Wednesday at 10:00 on FX: It is an end of an era Wednesday as Rescue Me finishes it run just days before the tenth anniversary of 9/11.

There's a Fire Starting in my Heart
Adele has the kind of voice that all her contemporaries on the pop chart would kill for and couldn’t come close to with all the auto-tune in the world. But let’s face it; her debut album was a bit of a bore. The music she was singing over was so bland it might as well have been Musak. And so when the first single off her sophomore outing, Rolling in the Deep was released it instantly became her best song. The voice remained unmistakable, but production went to another level thanks to Paul Epworth (Florence + The Machine) with opening strumming of a guitar which adding a driving bass drum a couple lines later and turning into a full on foot stomping clap along by the bridge. Even her phrasing gets betters, when she says, “Don’t underestimate the things that I will do” you can’t help but believe her while chills go up your spine.
And that sophomore album 21 (she is keeping with the age of when she recorded the record theme from 19) continues the promise of Rolling in the Deep. After the album kicks off with the first single, it goes straight into Rumor Has It which could have been the most haunting song from the girl group era of the sixties. Then out of nowhere the song slows down for a even more haunting piano accompanying part before picking right back up again.
Aside from Rolling in the Deep, Epworth helped write two of the best songs on the album. I’ll Be Waiting opens with an Elton John flair on piano before being joined by some horns and is easily the most fun you will have listening to Adele and listening to the song makes you wonder why she doesn’t go up tempo more often. He Won’t Go starts off with the beat and piano riff from The Roots version of Dear God before morphing into a soft rock R&B song from the eighties without managing to sound cheesy.
Rick Rubin, who produced four of the tracks, goes for the less is more approach he took when guiding Johnny Cash’s American records. Don’t You Remember and One and Only are the songs on the new albums most reminiscent of her previous album. And where Rubin made an art of picking cover songs for Cash, having Adele cover Love Song by The Cure with an acoustic bossa nove twinge just doesn’t reach the highs she had when she reworked To Make You Feel My Love by Bob Dylan on her last album which is the only advance 19 has over 21.
Song to Download – I'll Be Waiting
21 gets a on my Terror Alert Scale.

I Want My Music Television - 1/18/11
There have been a couple of videos that have caught my eye lately so I thought I’d give them some love since the death of Musical Television left a void for a forum on the art form. If you are interested in buying the video through iTunes, click the title link (where available). If you are interested in buying the song, look for a link in the analysis.
I though the ten degrees and a foot of snow were bad here in Northeast Ohio, but at least the snow hasn’t come indoors like Casa de Taylor Swift. Though I am not entirely sure what is going on with random dude walking across small town winter landscape.
I get the feeling the production crew just asked for three random situation and they came up with dude fighting in a room full of chalk, someone breaking dinnerware, a room full of glasses, and a drummer playing in a corner. To which the director goes, “not random enough.” “well how about adding miniature city going up in flames,” “brilliant, film it.” Ladies and gentlemen, ADELE’s latest video.
It looks like Kanye West was also a fan of The Walking Dead, and sadly, Twilight. And I wonder when someone is going to point out that Jay-Z just latches on to great beats and really hasn’t spit a great verse since his un-retirement.
Not sure what is with the metallic Lady Gaga looking person, but I am excited for the new Raphael Saadiq album.
