Around the Tubes: June 6, 2025

I have gotten a plethora of cool press releases flooding my inbox recently that you may find interesting. This post includes blurbs on Wicked: For GoodCall Her AlexClueless, Dropkick Murphys, Young the Giant, and Cynthia Erivo.

And now whatever way our stories end, I know you have rewritten mine by being my friend …  Last year’s global cinematic cultural sensation, which became the most successful Broadway film adaptation of all time, now reaches its epic, electrifying, emotional conclusion in Wicked: For Good.   Directed once again by award-winning director Jon M. Chu and starring the spectacular returning cast, led by Academy Award® nominated superstars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the final chapter of the untold story of the witches of Oz begins with Elphaba and Glinda estranged and living with the consequences of their choices.

What does it take to become the most influential female podcaster of a generation? Following Alex Cooper as she prepares for her first tour, this compelling two-part documentary series traces Cooper's evolution—from a self-conscious kid growing up in Pennsylvania to the voice behind “Call Her Daddy,” a podcast that redefined the conversation for women everywhere. Directed by Ry Russo-Young ("Nuclear Family"), the series offers an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at the life-defining events that shaped Cooper’s journey as she grew from a 24-year-old woman with a sex and dating podcast to the CEO of a media empire in just six years. More than just a success story, it's a portrait of a woman who is creating a space where women feel seen, heard, and empowered.  “Call Her Alex” is directed by Ry Russo-Young (Peabody Award-nominated “Nuclear Family”).

“As if!!!!” UMe marks the 30th anniversary of Paramount Pictures’ 1995 comedy classic Clueless, by releasing the movie’s soundtrack on both standard weight vinyl and a limited-edition standard weight pink colored vinyl – available now HERE.  Loosely based on Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma, Clueless was hilariously updated to Beverly Hills High School in the 1990s by writer/director Amy Heckerling.  The iconic film stars Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz, Stacey Dash as her best friend Dionne, Brittany Murphy as Tai, the ugly duckling transformed into a beautiful swan, and Paul Rudd as Cher’s disapproving ex-stepbrother.

Dropkick Murphys new album For The People shows courage and confidence, speaking up against the injustices happening in the United States, doing so with the strength and power that harkens back to Dropkick Murphys’ earliest punk rock roots. For The People is more than a title. It’s a heartfelt stance, a declaration of who this band is—and who they’ve always been.  For The People will be released digitally on July 4 via the band’s Dummy Luck Music / Play It Again Sam, with the LP and CD release featuring 5 bonus tracks out October 10. The poignant album cover was created by renowned social/political artist Shepard Fairey's design firm Studio Number One, and the album was produced and mixed by longtime Dropkick Murphys collaborator Ted Hutt.

Critically-acclaimed, multi-platinum selling band Young the Giant announces the In The Open 2025 Acoustic Tour. An intimate concert experience performed in beautiful spaces and venues around the country, the band will be supported by Cassandra Coleman (debut album produced by Jack Antonoff out June 6 via Warner) throughout. The tour will begin at the Waikiki Shell in Honolulu, HI on August 15, featuring support from Cold War Kids, with a grand finale at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on October 7 where Young the Giant will be joined by Saint Motel.  Young the Giant shared that, “’In The Open’ has been our superpower as a band since we started playing music together. There’s something so thrilling about reimagining our music in a way that’s more improvised, less controlled, and in a place you wouldn’t expect. We’re hoping to bring this feeling to you in our new tour Young the Giant: In The Open. While we can’t play a full set for you under a bridge or on a cliffside, we hope these beautiful intimate venues will give you the same feeling.”  Tickets will be available starting with artist presale on Tuesday, June 3 at 10 am local time. Venue/local presales begin the following day, June 4 at 10 am local, followed by Spotify’s presale on June 5 at 10 am local. All presales end on Thursday, June 5 at 10 pm local and general on sale begins Friday, June 6 at 10 am local at youngthegiant.com

After building widespread anticipation for its arrival throughout culture, GRAMMY®, Tony®, and EMMY® Award winner and three-time Academy® Award nominee Cynthia Erivo proudly presents her anxiously awaited new album, I Forgive You, out now via Verve Records/Republic Records.  Listen HERE.  She set the stage for the release with “Worst Of Me. This standout has already amassed amazing critical acclaim. Forbes raved, Erivo’s soaring vocals are right at home in the emotionally charged R&B ballad as she addresses a past lover who left her in pain, and Billboard applauded how, The artist brings out some of her deepest vulnerabilities, belting out her deepest pains in a powerful synth pop anthem.” Essence described it as a “beautiful ballad.

57 Channels and Only This Is On: May 1, 2025

MobLand:  Um, did Harry know the dinner was a set up.  He seemed way too calm.  Or is he looking for a way out of that crazy family and is ready to go work for the lady he did a favor to?  That seems like a much better business opportunity.

The Walking Dead: Dead City:  So, Hershel is in cahoots with the old lady?  What is going on there?  And just how did Negan figure out the walker was really a human?

The Last of Us:  I doubt that is what happens but I would be perfectly okay if Abby kills Ellie.  Such an annoying and stupid character.  But is next season really going to be season two but from Abby’s perspective?  On one hand, Kaitlyn Dever is a much actor.  But on the other, why not just do a ten-episode season that covers both perspective?  Now the creator says he will need four seasons to complete the story.  Ugg, did he not see the ratings nosedive this season?  Better wrap it up buddy.

The Librarians: The Next Chapter:  It took me a moment to realize when I remember the scientist from.  She was the evil dude’s daughter on The Head.  But this is the same entreatingly silly conceit of the original.  I wonder just how many original cast members we will see.

The Handmaid’s Tale: I know there is a spin-off they have to adhere to, but a little silly that the series ends with June still not being able to free her other daughter.  Something she has been actively doing since the second season.  I also was kind of lost with what was going on with Alexis Bledel.  But we got an uneven finale to a show that has been extremely uneven since the second season.

Leverage: Redemption:  Okay, that was one of the most elaborate cons they have come up with, and it was highly entertaining.

Hacks:  Last week felt like more of a season finale while this felt more like a season premiere.  I have a feeling next season will be flipped with Deborah supporting Ava on her comedy career.

I have gotten a plethora of cool press releases flooding my inbox recently that you may find interesting. This post includes blurbs on King of the Hill, Bono, Lorde, Robert Randolph, Al Jardine, Sophia Warren, and Jayne Kelli.

- Hulu announced the beloved adult animated series “King of the Hill” Revival is set to premiere Monday, August 4, 2025 with 10 episodes.  Check out a first look clip from the new season 14 show opening.  The season 14 revival picks up several years after we last saw the Hill family - Hank and Peggy Hill are now retired and return to a changed Arlen after years of working in Saudi Arabia; and Bobby is 21 and living his best life while navigating adulthood as a chef in Dallas.

Island/Interscope/UMe today announced details of Stories Of Surrender EP, a new Limited Edition 3-track Live EP from Bono, set for release on May 30th to accompany the acclaimed Apple Original Film titled Bono: Stories of Surrender, also available from May 30th on Apple TV+. ListeHERE.  The Stories Of Surrender EP features live recordings of three U2 tracks – “Desire,” “The Showman,” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday” – taken from Bono’s one-man stage show of the same name, itself inspired by his bestselling memoir Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.

Fresh off the back of a completely sold-out North American tour and record-breaking demand across the UK and Europe, Lorde today releases her next single, “Man of the Year”. Listen to “Man of the Year” HERE and watch the music video HERE.  The track, co-produced by Lorde and Jim-E Stack, follows the breakout success of “What Was That”, which debuted at #1 on US Spotify and climbed to #5 globally – marking her highest streaming debut since “Royals”.

“When Will The Love Rain Down” marks a powerful new chapter in Robert Randolph’s Sun Records debut. With a thundering groove and a towering vocal performance from Grammy-winning vocalist Judith Hill, the song is the third single from Randolph’s forthcoming album Preacher Kids (out June 27) and the first track recorded for the project—a deeply emotional standout that shaped the tone of the entire record.  Built on a bedrock of blues and gospel, “When Will The Love Rain Down” began as an instrumental jam, its haunting pedal steel lines and moody percussion creating a space for something bigger to take root. Randolph sent the track to Hill, and what she returned was so moving, so immediate, it couldn’t be touched.  Watch the video for “When Will The Love Rain Down” HERE

The legendary Al Jardine, co-founding singer, songwriter and guitarist of The Beach Boys, has just released his first new collection of songs in 15 years with the eclectic new 4-song digital EP, Islands In The Sun. Available to stream and download everywhere today, the EP is chock full of Jardine’s sharp songwriting, iconic, summery voice and the type of good vibes and trademark harmonies that only a Beach Boy can provide. The album was recorded at Al’s home studio on the California coast and produced by Al alongside Stevie Heger (co-producer of Al’s debut studio album, A Postcard from California) and longtime Beach Boys/Brian Wilson sound engineer Jeff Peters.  Stream Islands In The Sunhttps://AlJardine.lnk.to/IslandInTheSunPR

Austin, TX-based alt-pop singer-songwriter Sophia Warren shares her resilient, raw sophomore EP, Adesso, the second in a series of three EPs, out now via Tigris 33/UMG. Along with the full project, Warren moves through her anxious fog as she attempts to quiet her mind on "Purple" and its matching visualizer, out now.  Cinematic and atmospheric, Adesso, meaning "now" in Italian, is a defiant declaration of independence–meeting Warren where she is today, unbound to anything or anyone. Produced by Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Slowdive), each track is its own intimate sonic portrait of Warren's inner-most struggles, fears and hopes as she sets off on a path towards healing and deeper self-discovery. Looking for peace within this present moment, Warren says the project allows her to finally be herself, not defined by love or loss, sharing, "The EP asks, who am I without them? What do I truly want? These songs are about me peeling back the layers of uncertainty and learning to trust my own voice. It’s scary, it’s raw, but it’s real." Adesso serves as the second installment in a three part series of EPs that trace Warren's experiences of growing up.  Watch "Purple" (Official Visualizer)

Nashville-based indie folk-pop singer-songwriter Jayne Kelli has released her new single, "Sister Golden Hair" (a cover of the America song), today, May 30, 2025! Recommended if you like: Ainslie Wills, Jill Andrews, Rose Cousins, Caroline Spence, Andrea Von Kampen.
