I’m Going Down, Follow if You Wanna

There was not a more subversive love song in recent memory then the one Sara Bareilles titled it. It screamed to be sung along to when coming on in your car. But behind the bouncy piano bop was a snarky response to her record company who wanted, well, you know. One assumes that same executive is who we have to thank for King of Anything (though I would like to think she wrote it Kanye West) which bounces around, this time with a brass band, and even snarkier lyrics perfectly visualized in the video when she holds out her hand, with a crown ring, to be kissed during the line, “Let me hold your crown babe.” This guy may be a tool, but thanks to him we have gotten some pure pop perfection from it.

King of Anything is just a sign of what is to come for her sophomore album Kaleidoscope Heart which brings a broader sound that her first outing. Hold My Heart is an anthemic balled heavy on the bass and drums. Gonna Get Over You is reminiscent of the days of girl groups complete with a nonsensical sing-along chorus.

Basket Case (not a Green Day cover) may be Sara’s most vulnerable song to date where she takes on the attributes of the title “whenever you’re gone” and trades in her piano for an acoustic guitar for much effect. She plugs in for the next song Let the Rain which starts as a ballad before exploding into a hand clapping groove. Where Love Song and King of Anything hide their vemon behind bouncy tracks, there is no hiding the distain on Machine Gun where Bareilles lets loose on the chorus “Maybe no body loved you when you were young.” You know this is the type of song you just have to hear live.

I wonder if King of Anything will be like You're So Vain where we are guessing the identity of the person in the song for the next three decades. My guess: Kanye West.


Sign Of A Victory (feat. Soweto Spiritual Singers) - R. Kelly



No one does an over the top inspirational anthem quite like R. Kelly. Whe dude goes all out, he really goes all out. I do not know why he doesn’t just release a straight gospel album. Well first he needs to give us more chapters from Trapped In the Closet (Chapters 1-12) - R. Kelly, then make a gospel album Kells.


Hot-n-Fun - N.E.R.D. & Nelly Furtado



Wow, that Nelly Furtado part is kind of jarring and takes you out of a pretty otherwise mellow song from N.E.R.D.

Know Your Enemy – Green Day



It looks like Green Day is continuing the paranoia theme of American Idiot with the follow up as this video has a strong 1984 feel to it. The song still sounds like a run of the mill Green Day song for better or worse.

Crimson and Clover – Prince



Not to be outdone by Kid Rock mashing up Sweet Home Alabama and Werewolf of London, Prince combines Tommy James and The Troggs but in a psychedelic way. As a bonus: no Kid Rock.

People C’mon – Delta Spirit



Me thinks the members of Delta Spirit have watch one too many episodes of Lost with all their flash forwards and flash backs and nonsensical storytelling. At least the song rock.

I’m on Fire – Sarah Bareilles



Over at BruceSpringsteen.com they started a new feature called Hangin’ Out on E Street where contemporary artist like Pete Yorn (Your Own Worst Enemy), The Avett Brothers (Glory Days), and Mat Kearney (Atlantic City) tackle their favorite songs from the Boss sometime with commentary from the artist. My personal favorite is by Sara Barielles who covers my one favorite songs from Springsteen.

Get on Your Boots - U2



A fairly boring video with just the members of U2 playing in front of a green screen with just random stuff happening behind them like a more psychedelic iPod commercial. Hopefully the song isn’t n indication for what No Line on the Horizon is going to be as the song is just a weaker version of Vertigo. Luckily U2 tend to release some of the weakest songs of an album as the first single and Get on Your Boots may rival Discoteque in its absurdity.


White Horse - Taylor Swift



Oh snap! It was the friend that he was cheating with. Okay, it wasn’t that surprising. And Taylor Swift may want to sticking to videos with no dialogue.


Falling Down - Oasis



So is this video suggesting that a member of Oasis once hooked up with a member of the royal family? Does Vegas have any odds up?


Gravity - Sara Bareillies



This new Sara Bareilles video reminds me a more colorful version of Fiona Apple’s Never Is a Promise video in the look and sound which is a good thing in my book.

100 Best Songs of 2008

Much apologies for being late on this but it does come before the end of the year. And even a day late, this may not be the definitive list that makes up the playlist on my iPod. To pull back the curtain of the 9th Green, typically I have two or three (or ten) drafts of the best songs of the tear before I am content with the results. Homecoming - Kanye West



I believe Kanye West is now half way to making a video for each song off his new album. I always found it silly to have the dude from Coldplay sing the hook about Chicago. I don’t think he remembers fireworks on Lake Michigan. The effect are pretty cool anyways.


I Will Possess Your Heart - Death Cab for Cutie



Yeah some die-hards are upset with this song but I have to give it up to anyone with the gall to go with an eight plus minute epic as their first single without any lyrics until half way through. Now if only Death Cab for Cutie had taken a page out of the Guns n’ Roses playbook and had an accompanying super epic video to go along with it. But the infectious bass line almost makes up for it.


Bottle it Up - Sara Bareilles



What I like about Sara Bareilles, and why I think she will outlast other potential one hit wonder of the moment Colbie Caillat, is that she has an underlying starkiness. If you thought Love Song was about some dude, take a closer listen to the lyrics (hint: its dircted at her record company). And I love the opening line of this song, “They’ll be girls across the nation that will eat this up.”


Madly - Tristan Prettyman



I should have a review of Tristan Prettyman’s album up sometime this week, but in short it is better than her debut, of course I think only a small handful ever heard it. To hold you over until I get that up, you can currently download this song for free as iTunes Free Single of the Week (as long as the below graphic is still of her).
